While I'm sure you know that neither are good for you, I guess you would have to look at all the social stuff that goes with it.

HEavy smoking is worse for your health, but it is a sociable habit, and doesn't really affect relationships with others too much. Heavy smokers can hold down a job etc.

Heavy drinking, while still bad for your health, may not be AS bad. But the social consequences are greater. Getting bladdered every night is not great, especially if you have a hangover the next morning, can stop you going into work, and you can't do night work. Then if you drink during the day, then it can inpinge on your job, the relationships you have with people. It can also affect your ability to be around children, many parents wont let children be around very drunk people.

Personally I'd rather not be an alcoholic if I had to choose.

BOTH! if you want a knackered liver then drink, if you want knackered lungs then smoke. Both are also very bad for your heart. Also think about how they affect other peple - kids see their parent in an alcoholic state so they are likely to follow suit, also passive smoking played a huge part in the death of Roy Castle. The lesser of the two evils is probably drinking if you live completely alone and your actions wont influence anyone else

Healthwise, alcohol abuse will have a much quicker derogatory effect than the time smoking does to inflict damage.
Although both being very very detrimental to good health, there are also severe psychological issues with drink dependency as opposed to suffering withdrawls from nicotine

They're about the same, just bad in different ways. If you want to beat your kids nightly, lose brain function, crucify your kidneys, etc., drink. If you want emphysema, throat cancer, sterility, hypertension and constricted arteries, smoke. Either way, quitting is hard but not quitting shaves years off your life. Better not to start.

Heavy drinking destroys your organs and you will die a painful death from liver and kidney failure. Heavy smoking will cause you to die a slow death from lack of breath or quickly from a heart attack or stroke.
