I was watching the 'diet doctor' on Fit TV last night (not sure of her name) and she was telling another lady about portion control - which I'm totally aware of for meats, starches, etc. But for fruit? I was under the impression that when it comes to vegetables AND fruits, more is always better. I realize fruit has sugars, but I don't see why you would pick a small apple over a large apple. Anyone have an answer?

It all links to overeating, it may not seem bad to have ONE bigger apple over a smaller apple, or ONE bigger piece of celery over a smaller piece, but eventually those ONEs all start to add up. Of course, if you do think you overeat and you are trying to control how much you get of the fruits and veggies, make sure you control everything else along with it.

Weight loss rests on sugar content more so than portion control. The sugar in fruits are seriously no different than regular table sugar. It affects the blood the same way. I read about a test conducted after eating grapes vs a candy bar the blood sugar raised the same. Corn is not a vegetable but a grain and will raise your blood sugar significantly. There are certain veges that are quite fine for not raising blood sugar and really the only fruits that one can eat without raising the blood sugar a great deal are berries.

Did you know that glass of orange juice outside of vitamin C which you can get from a pill if your trying to lose weight has as much sugar as a candy bar? Juice has most of their fiber removed in the juicing process. If you need to lose weight you need to limit fruit and fruit juices.

Fruits and veggies are low calorie foods, so you don't have to worry quite as much about portion control with these foods. Yes, fruits do contain sugar, but it is healthy sugar, unlike the kind found in cookies and other sweets. I personally wouldn't worry about whether your eating the small or large apple. Just aim to get the appropriate number of servings in that food group. I've never really heard obese people blame their weight on eating too many large fruits.

These days everything has to be portion contolled. WHen it comes to fruits and veggies most people dont get enough, so more is USUALLY better. But fruits and veggies still have calories in them, so you have to watch them to. Like dont eat a bag of oranges everyday plus "regular" portion controlled meals and wonder why you arent losing weight... Does that make sense?
