I have 2 cats and it seems there is always a lot of urine clumps of litter in their litter box. Luckily he isn't peeing anywhere else yet, but I have fear that his extreme drinking is a sign of something since cats don't typically drink a lot. I heard him come in the room over 4 times one morning and drank for at least a good 10 to 15 seconds.

Hi there...symtoms of excessive thirst and urination may likely be indicative of Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) which is very common with senior cats. Consider ringing your veterinarian as soon as possible. CRF is manageable if caught early enough, however if left untreated it can be fatal.

I would suggest seing your vet

I got this from a site (cited below)

"Drinking excessively (more than about a cup of water a day) is called polydipsia. It can be a sign of disease or a response to environmental conditions and diet. For example, the latter can mean cats who eat exclusively dry food drink more than those who eat canned because canned food contains mostly water. Some cats drink an excessive amount of water for attention or because they like the taste of fresh water flowing out of a spigot. Generally, though, cats are not big water drinkers. "

I would say take your cat to the vet just in case. it could be signs of kidney problems

Excessive drinking can be a sign of kidney problems or of diabetes. You should definitely take him to the vet and bring a urine sample with you when you go. If he has one of these conditions, with the proper medication, he could still live a long and healthy life. Good luck!

Your cat is of the age when he definitely needs a thorough workup from a vet. Drinking great quantities of water and peeing profusely can be a sign of hyperthroidism or diabetes in cats. Both are serious conditions which, fortunately, are treatable with medication.

Please investigate these possibilities with your vet.
