Help my little black lab Whiskey is still peeing in his kennel. He just does it during the night, we try to wake up when he whines but sometimes he whines so quietly we don't hear him. He is doing really well when we are in the house and awake but at night he always seems to pee in his kennel. Is there anything I can do or is it just that his bladder is still pretty small and he can't hold it? Is this normal?

We bought him a huge cage, but it came with a divider so we put that in right away to make is smaller. Also we take away water at about 8 pm but he seems to get pretty thirsty. He wakes us up at about 530 am so he is sleeping pretty long before anything happens. all of these ideas are great thanks everyone keep em coming.!

ok bw you kind of pissed me off. Hit myself over the head with a newspaper! WHATEVER! Whiskey is an awesome dog, extremely well behaved for his age I am simple asking for a little guidance every dog is different, all I want to know is that this is normal (I Have tons of patience with him) I know that up to one year of hell with the potty training is equal to many many years of happiness and companionship!!! Please don't verbally attack me just send a little helpful note!

Totally normal--sounds like you're actually doing pretty good for 10 wks old. i would set an alarm at night. Take him out every three hours, then try four, and so on, until he makes it the whole night. Also, as he gets older, and his bladder grows, it will get even easier. Hang in there!

First of all your lab is still a baby and kennel/house training takes time. Second you need to make sure that his kennel is only large enough for him to stand up, sit down, lay down, and turn around. Anything bigger and he will use the remainder of the room as a potty. Third NO food or water in the kennel. And last but not least , if you can't hear your pup's signal that he neds to go out, set your alarm about 3 hours after you put him down for the night and get up and take him outside.

PS I would NEVER withhold food and water from a young puppy . This could lead to low blood sugar, or dehydration and your puppy could die. Please check with your Vet before doing such a thing.

This is normal. He is only 10 weeks old. You have to be more proactive then waiting until he whines, unfortunately. You need to get yourself up to take him out at least once in the night if you know that he has to pee at least once a night. You won't have to do it forever, so try to just buckle down and set the alarm. He'll mature very quickly enough to be able to hold it at night. You don't let the pup set the routine. You set the routine for the pup.

that means he just cant hold it or his crate is too big. If its too big then he can potty on one side and sleep on the other. If you want buy dividers to make it smaller.. dogs hate to potty where they sleep. Also he has very little control over his bladder. Think of him like a baby. Babies cant hold it neither can he. He will grow out of it around 6 months, thats when he can hold it, but until then he needs a smaller space and needs to go out every 3 hours or more. Just make a schedule and set your alarm!

His kennel may be still too large. It should only be big enough for him to stand up, turn around, and stretch in. Not big enough for a little corner for him to pee in. Dogs should NEVER mess where they sleep, but if there is a spot in there for him to mess and then another corner to sleep, he will do both.
One thing to try is a doggie schedule.
Tell him to "go kennel" at the same time every night, as late as possible. Try 11:30 pm if you can.
Let him sleep through the night, even if he whines to be let out. He needs to learn to hold it all night, in his crate.
If he whines to get out, and you let him out, he will learn from then on that all he has to do is whine to be let out, and this is not a way for him to learn to hold it in until morning.
In the AM, try and get up as early as possible to give him his morning potty run, try 5 AM.
As soon as he gets out of the crate, it is out to potty, and nothing else.

He should definitely be able to hold it through the night, especially if you bring up his water and food at 8 PM every night.

This is not unusual at all. Many puppies at this age do not have the bladder control to hold it for long periods of time. Get yourself an inexpensive baby monitor so that you can hear him when he whines. When he does whine, get him out as quickly as possible and praise him for going. With time, this will decrease. Be glad that he is a clean dog who does not want to get his den dirty.

Secondly, do not with hold water from him All dogs, puppies included, need to have access to water at all times. It is not good for their internal development to have water withheld from them. Some dogs are just naturally more heavy drinkers than others, just as with some people.

It is normal for puppies to be nervous for a long time or a short time when they are in a new place. Take him out to go potty every night before you go to bed. During the day, work on pootty training. If this problem continues, he might have urinary problems and you should seek veterinary help.

We take all food and water away from our pets at certain time of day..Our oldest is 10 Months and he gets food and water put up at 8PM, and the youngest is 4 Months she has food and water put up at 6PM they both do really well throughout night and are good until about 5-6 am the next morning...So try puting water up at around 6 or 7 and then take them out one last time before you go to bed and I am sure they will stop going in the middle of the nght...

It sounds like he might not feel it in the night. I have a shih-tzu papillion mix and since I brought her home she has never peed in her crate at night. I've noticed that she doesn't like to be around her pee and poop. You might want to try making the crate small to discourage him from going during the night. Also take him out right before you go to bed, and right after you get up in the mornings. I hope this helps.

This is completely normal, we have a lab who has just turned 4. For the first few years he was a nightmare, peeing, chewing destroying - then he just seemed to grow up. Unfortunately labs have a very long childhood in comparison with other breeds.
