can you punish inanimate objects?

No. You can just punish something in the name of something that doesn't exist.

Since part of punishment is in the mind of the one punishing, then yes, you may punish an inanimate object (say, kick an offending computer up and down the hallway) and it may help you vent some frustration...

If it doesn't exist it's not there to punish. The only thing you are punishing when you "take it out" on an inanimate object is yourself.

You can pushing something that doesn't exist, if its in your head (wait, then that means it does exist in theory). And, you can punish imanimate objects...when ever my computer acts up, I throw it outside on the lawn. There! That teaches it!

What do you mean by "punish"? I suppose you could but it would mean absolutely nothing.
