The people just below our apartment have a full home theatre system, and every so often I have to go down knock on the door and politely ask them to turn down the volume. They are very nice about it, but after a few days its the same thing. The vibrations come up through the wood floor and almost make me nauseous. I don't want to report them as they do comply when ASKED, but we can't go on doing this forever.

you have to check with your city government ordinance. by the way you describe it, they're too loud so just call the cops on them right away.

I've had this problem myself a while back. People buy sound systems that are much more than they can ever actually use, so why pay for what you can use, is my thinking.
I do not know the actual db value but remind your neighbor that there are numbers on the volume control. If it is on three when you knock on the door then they know they have to keep it below three.
I would tell him, i'm not trying to be rude but I have no desire to go through this routine every day. So something has to happen here to end this and be final, or I will have to take it to the next level because I will not just tollerate this disturbance.
(you'll want to reword this though).

I had a problem with noisy neighbors and was told that "any noise which you consider a disturbance, regardless of the time of day, may be reported." But it really depends on where you are. Different states have different laws about which hours (if any) must be silent, or what constitutes a noise infraction. Have you tried calling your local law enforcement? Or your apartment manager? They might have their own guidelines.

Also, sometimes it helps if you can get them to pull their entertainment center and speakers away from the walls, and/or put them on a soundproof pad so that the vibrations don't travel through the building.

Where there are noise ordinances in place it usually restricts any sound that can be heard outside of the unit.

The only way that you're likely to bring a stop to it is to complain to the landlord (in writing!) whenever it happens.

Ask for their phone number and then call them when it happens. Try to leave a voicemail so that they can hear the noise that they are making in your apartment.
