Panic attacks, in my opinion, are caused by not trusting the process of life - a feeling that the rug can be pulled out from under us at any time without warning, then when something starts to go wrong the "this is it, it is all going to blow up in my face" feeling hits that fear button and it's out of control. My dad has suffered from these for a long time and i have had a couple in my life.

My first suggestion is olive oil on your adrenal glands - I rub it on my back, just below my ribs after every shower to help keep my adrenal glands fed and calm (they love the essential fatty acids).

Secondly, there are some great calming herbal remedies - like Kava Kava, SAMe and even just extra Vitamin B and Magnesium in your diet can be very calming.

Thirdly, visualization and affirmations helped me very much. Any time I start to get nervous or worried, I would remind myself that I am perfectly safe - and you are. You know rationally that people go out and about their business with no harm much more often than not - now you need to remind your subconscious and your emotions that you are safe. Any time you hear yourself think something negative, take a deep breath and say in your mind (or aloud if you can) "I am safe" to gently correct that pattern.

Visualizing can be very powerful and work very quickly. Sit quietly for 3-5 minutes and get a good clear picture in your mind of your own self. See yourself happy, confident and peaceful. In you mind you can visualize anything and still be perfectly safe - so do so. Clearly see yourself going to the grocery store and chatting with people, laughing and smiling. Try to feel that ease and happiness. The more often and more clearly you can do this the better off you are. What you are doing is sending a clear picture to the powers that be of just what you want.

Finally, exercise is always great - the endorphins they stimulate can be very helpful. Anything that is repetitive will help you meditate and soothe the brain (particularly if you do your affirmations and visualization while exercising) - but I find that yoga is the very best thing for me to quiet my mind. Yoga Journal on line has all kinds of tips and tricks for beginners through experts along with full descriptions of how to do pose, as pose finder to target body system or muscle groups, and excellent articles - all free.

So soothing herbs and essential fatty acids, visualization and affirmations and exercise. All of these things will help you rid your life of anxiety attacks. All free and some will show amazing results very quickly - I think you will be impressed in just 2 weeks at the difference with dilligent practice.

I wish you the most wonderful year of your life. May the new year surround you in peace and joy and prosperity such that you can breath and relax into the joy that life should be - best armed to tackle your own unique goals with the tools you have gotten from your own unique background (and by that I am hoping that you come away with compassion for people and yourself and a desire to treat people kindly and stay healthy, etc.). Many blessings upon you.

Peace!

I got them but not anymore.. I just trained my mind and became more positive.. Panic attacks are in your mind and there is no reason to have them .. You are no different from anyone else. Same problems that everyone gets.. Panic attacks are a symptom of reaction that takes place when your nervous and afraid. But a lot of the time those fears are completly unfounded. Tell yourself that regularly and tell your brain to stop causing you problems. The brain is like a friend and an enemy all in one, negative and positive so to speak. Dont let your negative brain win the battle.. You have two choices. (One ) -live with and listen to the destructive negative thoughts (brain ) and let it make your life a misery or 2- Tell it to F**k off and take controll and live and listen to the positive thoughts (brain ) and that can only lead to one thing and thats a much happier life. So do as I did and take control. The power is inside you and you can ' not mabe' -CAN tap in to this power and harness it.. Also feed your brain with plenty of oxegen by deep breathing exercises especially when you feel an attack coming on. No more panic attacks for me ..Good Luck, I wish you well.. You will suceed I promise you..

You have a number of options.
1. The most popular (but damaging) option is to get drugs.
2. if you have a issue or problem with a certain event or situation or person, see a therapist and work through it, learning new coping skills. If seeing a therapist isn't an option, self-help books might put you in a better frame of mind. Plus, there are many books on panic/anxiety and also a free online course that you take over a period of weeks at http://www.paniccenter.net
3. If you have irrational phobias in an otherwise balanced life, try self-hypnosis-type programs like http://www.panic-anxiety.com
4. Calming herbs like valerian, kava-kava or special formulas might help to take the edge off.
5. Exercises like tai chi or yoga (many libraries have DVDs you can rent) are helpful to calm the breathing and mind.
6. If you're having both mental and physical symptoms, such as heart palpitations, anxiety, feeling weak, confused, etc. you could have a hormone imbalance, which would take blood tests to determine, and simple hormone creams to fix- generally within a matter of days. If you have a hormone imbalance (NOT a chemical imbalance) no breathing exercises or hypnosis or self-talk is going to help- the physical imbalance in the adrenals, thyroid, or cortisol levels.

Some OTC allergy meds have the same ingredients as the anxiety pills and seem to help me out when I have no other options (sudafed, etc). Aside from that, you need to change the way you think about things. Unfortunately life doesn't change, but the way you look and react to things can. It's really up to you. Try to get some self help books on the subject so you can get control again. I've been there myself and I still have my off days, but nothing like I use to. It's a New Year....start it on a positive note...I know you can do it!

Yes, many breathing techniques will help, as soon as you start feeling a panic attack coming your way you breath in and then let the air slowly come out~ This and prayer together will help you alot. Good Luck~ Life can seem very hard if we don't know how to overcome these situations~

I have the same problem, try breathing slowly. Breathe through your nose and out through your mouth so slowly that a candle will flicker but not go out. Also try to picture yourself in your favorite place and try to feel it along with picturing it, that calms you down. If you start thinking about the worst possible outcome, Before get to freaking out stop yourself and ask yourself wheres the evidence, how do I know this will happen. The try to change the subject, its very hard to do that, I know but try. If none of these things help you, Get back on your meds or see a therepist. If your ashamed of seeing one, purchase some books on self help they can be useful. Maybe trying to do something else, read a book, listen to music, try not to use TV to much, you could start relying on it and not get enough exesise.
Hope this Helps.

You need to learn relaxation exercises such as deep breathing, guided imagery, where you picture yourself in a relaxing place. You make up a place that feels safe. No one else can go there. Imagine the blue sky, white clouds, sun on your face. Cool breeze. Relax your whole body starting at your feet. Then move upward. Continue deep breathing. Imagine a small cloud floating over you. It is there to take all of your stress away. As you look up begin to release your stress and allow it to go into the small cloud. As it does, the cloud becomes bigger and darker. Once you have releases all of your tensions, the cloud floats away. You then have your safe place to be. You continue to enjoy the solitude, the smells, clouds and sunshine.
If you do this exercise enough, you will get so you can do it anytime. Even quickly. It really helps you relax when you get panicky. Good luck!

My mom had panic attacks in relation to her thyroid problem. Find something that calms you down (like the smell of lavender) and try to get it so you can take it with you (like a bottle of lavender perfume). If you have a panic attack in public, try to find someplace you can be alone and not draw attention to yourself while it passes. Try to think of things that make you laugh.

I hope I helped.

when an anxiety attack knock at your mind's door again, just stay where you are, close your eyes and start a revolution against this unwelcome guest. i mean, you have to believe that it is fantasy, just an illusion. maybe this ominous guest isn't well aware of how strong you are. the power is in you, not in the illness. these scary thoughts are fed by you! so, extinguish it.
