Dream sleep, also known as Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, is a necessary part of your sleep cycle. No one is exactly sure why we dream; all intelligent creatures have REM sleep. You actually have REM twice during a normal sleep cycle. The sequence is twilight sleep, REM sleep, deep sleep, REM sleep, twilight sleep, then awakening. Most of us don't remember waking up after the completion of a sleep cycle, thus the illusion you've slept through 8 hours. Sleep cycles vary from individual to individual. When the sleep cycle is altered by drugs, such as sedatives, we don't go through the REM phase, instead going straight into deep sleep. Experts have determined REM sleep is necessary for the brain to "forget" unimportant information, and transition into deep sleep. People deprived of REM sleep often suffer from depression and confusion.
Bad dreams or nightmares are often the result of stress, trauma, or as a side effect of certain drugs. Meditation and relaxation exercises prior to sleep have been cited as helpful in preventing bad dreams. Avoiding caffeine several hours before going to bed also helps. It might be a good idea to talk to your doctor as well.

Actually, you NEED to dream. It's your mind's way of de-stressing. If you don't like what you are dreaming about, you can read a book or watch a movie before bed to help "direct" your dreaming mind toward a particular subject.

i think of that is impossible to have a dream the place you're actually not in it, or are actually not the main 'character' in it. the clarification being that targets are an action of your subconscious concepts, which belongs to you on my own.
