This is called kneeding, and is perfectly normal. cats normally kneed when they are still drinking their mother's milk, and kneeding when they are older just means that they like the blanket (or whatever surface) and it reminds them of their mother (which is comforting). the drooling probably stems from this as well

This is a trait in almost all cats left over from the days when they were nursing on their mommy. The "kneeding" or "making biscuits" with their paws is how they they pushed around the mothers teat to get the milk to come out faster. Personally, I like it when my cat wants to give me "massages" on my legs. It's just a "cat-thing". Not every, single cat does this, and you will find it most often when the kittens have been taken away from their mother too soon.But--what is too soon? Some want to nurse until the mommy cat won't put up with it anymore. Enjoy it. I think it's a cute trait in cats that you won't find in dogs.

I've never noticed my cat drooling, but it stands to reason. Cats knead with their paws, from the time they are newborn. When kittens nurse, they do this to their mother's milk engorged teats ... which causes a let down of milk. This is probably why your cat drools at the same time.

When a cat is weened and continues to do this, it's kind of a comfort thing ... your kitty is displaying how happy and content he is :)

When cats are kittens, they "knead" on their mother's breasts while nursing in order to increase the flow of breast milk. It becomes a habit and they even do it while in their sleep. This habitual behavior continues even after the cat has grown up and mother's milk is long gone. This may even explain the salivating: the cat may be reminiscing about the days of drinking mother's warm milk and literally drooling at the thought.

This is just my theory, but I think it is a security thing, like us having a blanket or a pacifier, but they never lose it. They are acting out the action they did when they nursed and the drooling probably comes from some sort of subconcious memory of their mother's milk. I think it's a soothing action for them and they do it when they are trying to get comfy or are getting petted. My mom's kitten lays on her bathroom rug and "makes biscuits" and sucks on the carpet! I like when they do it against me, it feels like a little kitty massage. Like I said, this is my theory.

The kneading motion cats make is left over from when they were kittens. They had to push on their mother cat's belly to start the milk flowing so they could nurse. Many cats still do that when they feel safe and comfortable. I've never haerd it referred to as "making biscuits". That's hilarious.

Cats do that because that's what they used to do when they were kittens and suckling from their mothers. They'd push their paws against their mother. When they grow older they still do it when they're trying to get comfortable.

Kittens are born with this instinct and it lets their moms know to 'let down' their milk. It's called kneading or paddling. Some kittens who are taken away from their moms too early do this the rest of their lives when they relax!
Hope this helps!
