I have a new Sony DVD/VHS recorder but can't get around the write protection on many of my tapes. I own them, I just don't want to buy them again on DVD!

I say good for you. Stick it to the man!
You buy it on VHS, later they want you buy it on DVD. Then later they want you to rebuy it on Blu-Ray, then whats next!? All so they can just keep lining their pockets with money.

If I knew Id tell you in a heatbeat, Ive been trying to figure this one out too.

Don't you know that's against the law. Why do you think the mfg. has gone to the trouble to put this protection on the first part of the VHS tape, if you keep doing this they will have to put the protection on the tape beyond the opening title sequence. Shame on you.
