Many will advocate the 357 SIG due to faster velocity and slightly increased ammo capacity, but I prefer the .45 ACP, big bullet and classic, hurts and incapacitates more to get hit hit by a cinder block @ 40 mph than by a baseball @ 90 mph.
Combined with a nearly flawless platform with wide variation of options (including hi-cap magazines) and levels of value, the 1911 is THE pistol.

Which is better, the .357 Sig or the .45acp???

Well, the .357 Sig is a more modern design which is loaded in pistols which hold more rounds. The Sig was designed to duplicate the stopping power of the .357 Magnum, which is a better manstopper than the .45.

The Texas Highway Patrol just about dropped the Sig 220 in .45acp in favor of the new Sig round which is better at shooting through barriers (car doors, glass, etc.) than the old .45 auto. The .45acp is early Twentieth Century technology--heavy, wide bullet moving slow--sort of like throwing a brick at your target rather than shooting a ball bearing from a slingshot. It works, but...

The real question is, "Has the .357 Sig successfully duplicated the performance of the .357 Magnum?" The jury is still out, but if this is in fact true, then the .357 Sig would definitely be the better round. Bottle-neck pistol bullets may be the wave of the future. Have you shot the 5.7?

I'd recommend you check out the 10mm Auto round instead of either of the ones you asked about. The 10mm loads I use in my Glock model 20 safely produce 680 foot pounds of energy, almost twice that of a standard .45, and penetrates far better than either a .45 or a .357. Depending on what bullet you choose, the 10mm will make awesome exit wounds because of the high velocity which makes hollow points act like TNT.
I've carried Glock 10mm pistols since 1992 and don't want anything else.

Better for what?

The .357 SIG is an impressive new round with limited manufacture and limited supply of ammo (read: expensive).

The .45 ACP is legendary, powerful and proven. Ammo is universal and cheap for practice.

I like the .357 SIG and have a P229 that shoots it. At nearly $30 a box of ammo, I can tell yhou it doesn't get shot nearly enough to be my "go-to" gun.

So my vote goes to the .45......as long as you PRACTICE well and often!

you didnt mention what you were using the gun for ,but a good rule of thumb is which one can you control better ,as these both are fine calibers but at completly different ends of the spectrum, the .357sig is a smaller faster bullet while the .45 is much heavier.also the .45 in my opinion( and i assume you mean acp and not long colt)has a greater ammunitions choice, but for concealed carry id stick with my first answer which one can you hit your target with.good luck!

I prefer the .45 ACP. The .357 sig is just a souped up 9mm (.355 vs. .357 diameter). Though either will do the job for self defense with proper shot placement.

At further distance the .357 sig is better in ballistics. But the .45 acp is easier to get ammo for and has more energy. But it all comes back to what you are using it for. Two diffrent cal., two diffrent purposes.

The .45 Cal is in my opinion the best self defense rd that has ever been, w/the .40 Cal S&W a very close 2nd.

I like the 45...its a nice subsonic round with plenty of knock down power with out a whole lot of through and through problems.
