I think I understand the sound you are describing and my cat has done the same thing. Probably your cat is hurting... like a stomache problem... maybe is needing to throw up or cough up a hairball or something. I know that doesn't sound pleasant. However, he/she may feel better after a little bit. If the cat continues to make these yowling sounds for a large portion of the day however, I would contact your vet.

I assume your cat doesnt normally sound like this. It may be hoarse or something.
Another thing i have noticed with my cats and my relatives cats is that in the middle of the night when no one is around to give them attention, they play "lost kitty", which is basically howling until someone wakes up and gives them attention. this meow is often different (deeper and fuller) than the normal meow.
If your cat only does this for a day or so or only does it at night or early morning when no one is awake, then don't worry about it. otherwise, see your vet.

Does your cat look sick? She might be trying to throw up, it sounds GROSS but if she had grass, an elastic or any other thing her stomach can not digest she has to get rid of it some way look at her eyes and try to notice if she is as active as normal. A REALLY possible thing is that she is in heat, if she is a cat that means it is possible for her to be in heat (she is not a kitten) Even if she has been fixed she can still go into heat, also my sis's cat is in heat right now so it must be "heat" season, my sis is waiting for an open spot to bring he cat to the vet to get fixed. Bring her to the vet. (i have been refering to your cat as a girl, but it might be a guy srry^_^) Make sure she is okay=)

if your cat is looking ill or stranger than usual it may be a warning sign. Is he up to date on his shots? Has he been bit recently, or mauled?

If he has been bit or scratched in the last few months he may be getting sick. I had a cat die this way. His last hours were spent yowling and stumbling around the house blindly.

However, if your cat looks normal, his eyes are bright, is up to date on all his shots, then he is probably just acting like the clown he is.

So laugh at his new trick and give him some extra attention for it. That's probably what he's after, anyways.

I have to wonder is your cat a female because it sounds like she is in "heat" if this is the case. They let out the most obnoxious sounds when they are in heat. Just a suggestion. Mine sort sounds like a cow everytime he uses the litterbox, go figure!

he/she may have a hairball. wait and see. If not check to see if anything else is out of the ordinary with it. Is she fed, watered, is her litter box dirty, is there another animal in the house, is she hurt in anyway? If any of those fix the problem. if its nothing and it continues call you vet

Try milking it, if you get a bucket full, check for horns and rename your cat bessie. If you get considerably less, rename the cat Chuck.
