Before changing your starter check/replace the plugs and distributor cap/rotor. Cheap and easier fix.

It can be any number of things from your starter to the alternator or the spark plugs or the fuel system. A way to eliminate the starter or alternator is by taking them off and then have them bench checked at a local parts store like Advance or AutoZone. I think even some Napa stores do this now but if those come back as being ok then it could be the plugs, plug wires, or coil packs. Another thing you could try is see if anyone you know has a OBD II fault reader and see if the engine is kicking a fault code.

fuel delivery system, check the gas, make sure there is some in the tank, make sure the fuel filter is not stopped up, then check the fuel pump. if that is not it your plugs may be fouled to the point they are not producing a spark to start the car, those are the simple things to check first, it could be other things that are more expensive and harder to find out, such as out of time, worn camshaft lobes, and others. Check the least expensive remedies first.

I would check the connection that goes to the battery. Make sure it is tight. This is the clamp that goes onto the metal post on the battery. This happened to me, I tightened it and the car started right away.

'trying to turn over' you mean the engine cranks or the starter just wines..... ?

If the engine cranks you have a fuel or ignition problem.

If the starter wines but does not engage the flywheel you have a starter problem (prob. the relay for a guess).

good luck

all the answers are decent so far and may be the problem... BUT dont single out one system. and dont through parts at it untill it starts. check gas first. not trying to make you sound stupid but it happens and the gage is always right. then check spark because if it isnt the fuel delivery then its the ignition system.
