Have you ever seen or heard or known someone who goes to the casino or is in the stock market and maybe doubles their money. This person is a winner as of now. Then seconds later they lose everything. If they "quit when they were ahead," they would have come out with double their money instead none. So that is what quit when your ahead means. Don't push your luck!

gambling is a different kind of situation. if you quit in a race then you will never be a winner but if you quit wile your ahead 500 bucks then your coming ahead
