The Nikon D40 would probably serve you better in the long run. You can start with the kit lens, which is all right, for a consumer lens, then decide which lens you'd like to drop a few bucks on.

The Nikon's low light performance would be better.

Go to www, dpreview to compare the cameras and see reviews.

You are better off with a pocket P&S. They take such great photos now that lugging around a SLR is a waste unless you buy some nice lenses ($$) to go with it. Spend that money on a higher end P&S that fits in your pocket and you will thank me on your next trip to Disney or where ever.

If you DO go with a SLR, don't cheap out on the lens because all of your images go through that and it will make a real difference.
