The instant killing of a dog which attacks a human being is unjustified as no consideration is given to any provocation or pain the animal may have endured - or the degree of blame attributable to the behaviour of the owner. And what about guard dogs specifically trained to attack - do they have a 'license to kill'?

It is a dog's instinct to protect his/her territory, and it should be taken into consideration when a dog bites. Sometimes they are protecting home and family and should be commended, sometimes they are just mean like jumping fences to attack toddlers on trikes those ones should be put down.

Killer dogs should get a fair trial. In any situation, there is evidence to consider, and the dog itself may be evidence. Instant destruction achieves nothing. Can you ever blame a dog for biting in self defence?

Guard dogs do not have a licence to kill. They are not trained to kill. They are trained to respond to a handler, and bring down an assailant by the right arm, as are police dogs.

The type of guard dog I think you might be talking about- that are just left somewhere to attack any intruder- should be an illegal use of a dog. They tend to beat the dogs so that they learn to be aggressive towards people. They are often poorly socialised and poorly trained- if at all. This is a dangerous, stupid use of a dog. No dog should be put in that situation.

I agree with you to a point. I am a master dog trainer specializing in aggression training and can see both sides. Most of the time I feel that aggressive dogs do pose a threat and should be trained so the the aggression can be controlled.

A trained protection dog is trained to bite if he is one that is placed in a business at night. But there are signs all over the fencing stating that there is a guard dog on duty. Now the dogs that have actually killed a human, YES, should be put down. That is aggression out of control.

I have trained many dogs for aggression but a professionally trained dog will not attack to kill unless provoked to do so or commanded to do so.

No there is no license to KILL for any dog. Although dogs kill other dogs or cats or other small animals but one that attacks a human is a different story. I don't think that they should be put down just because they brought blood, nooo. But a vicious, out of contol dog that has killed a human, Yes.

I understand what you are saying. All the responsibility is with the owner to make sure these dogs are kept under control. Nevertheless...once they have attacked...for whatever reason it is a huge problem what to do next. The owner should be held totally responsible with fines and imprisonment. The dog unfortunately will be near impossible to re home and there is no guarantee it wouldn't attack again as in many circumstances it's never known really what triggers an attack. Irresponsible breeding and sale of puppies needs to be looked at also. Some kind of dog licensing needs to be brought back and licensing for breeders...help with neutering and spaying of potentially dangerous dogs. More legal controls and tracking of certain breeds and a strict law to prevent irresponsible owners from purchasing or owning another dog.

With the recent press about "bad" dogs i do not know what to say on this matter. I personally think that dogs should not be left unattended around children. Kids can torment dogs and they react by attack. We all know any animal with sharp teeth are potentially dangerous and everyone should be wary!!!
Many "dangerous" dog breeds grow old without ever attacking......i can do nothing but presume that maybe some dogs have been provoked into attacks.

I think that they should figure out exactly what caused the attack. I have seen dog be brought in for rabies observation when a kid was reaching over the fence into the dogs yard and hitting it with a stick while the dog was eating. The mother wanted the dog put to sleep but because her child provoked the dog to attack they just did rabies observation and let the dog go home. It was a very sweet dog even when in a kennel at our clinic. So in that case it would have been a bad choice to put to sleep that dog. Heck I would attack you if I was in my yard eating my dinner and you reach over into my yard and started hitting me with a stick!!

Also my husband has been attacked by a dog but in his case the owners should have been shot. He was a little boy and the owners told him to take away the Dobermans food while it was eating so he could pet it. Well being maybe 4 yrs old he just wanted to pet the dog and tried to take the food and the dog attacked him and had to have his skull stapled. In that case the dog might need some training to not be food aggressive but come on what owner with any brains will tell some one to take away their dogs food while eating. Your asking for trouble with that.

Yes dogs that just go around attacking unprovoked should be put to sleep but you need to make sure that the dogs arent being falsely set up to look like bad dogs just to get them put to sleep. I would be furious if I saw someone purposely provoke my Shepard into attacking them just so they could get her put to sleep. Dont think that people dont do that. Those kind of people are the ones that go around suing everyone becuase they themsleves are morons and would probably be the people to frame dogs just because of the breed.

sorry so long

Approximately 75% of dog attacks are the owner's fault, I think all dogs should get fair trial. Many attacks are also Provoked, ex, kids throwing rocks, beating sticks against fences, etc. It can maek a do angry. I know this from experiance..we have 2 dobies and 2 puttbulls, and the neighborhood hoodlums throw rocks at them all of the time.

The rpoblem is you cant reason with an animal and get 'inside' thier head. One option woudl be to imprison them, but thats about the same as killing them. You can never find out if a dog is inherently bad or whether it was provoked, so the chance cannot be taken for it to happen again.
Although I agree that it sometimes happens too quickly after a dog bites, with barely any discussion as to the circumstances.

Yes when there trained like that or abused severly to the point of being ruthless i think it's different than just a normal everyday dog. But yeah if it was attacking my children in that instance everything would be different and i wouldn't care what kinda background it had it would be as good as dead in my opinion. Nothing hurts my kids and make them bleed w/out getting away with it!

Dogs should not be held accountable for the actions that they are taught to do. People will get dogs and train them to attack people or abuse them so they assume all people are bad and it is not the fault of the dog. The dog is only doing what he was taught to do or believes he is defending himself. There is no such thing as a bad dog, just a lousy owner.
