I have a darling six month old boy. I am a stay at home mom looking for something fun we can go out and do together. Has anyone taken the mommy and me swim lessons with a child this young? They are offered for children 6 months- 3 years. Do you think that he would enjoy it or would you wait until summer when he is closer to one year? Just curious. Do you have any other suggestions of fun activities we can do together during these winter months?

I took my daughter at 6 months and I loved it! Obviously she was too young to understand what was going on, but it's great bonding, plus I learned a lot of very helpful things. I learned that if you blow in a baby's face they have a natural reflex to hold their breath and then you can dunk them under water safely. That helps for when their older because then they aren't afraid to get under the water (also helps when washing out hair at bathtime). By 1 year, my daughter was swimming by herself and was able to "monkey walk" on the wall. She knew how to get to the side in case she ever fell in. I would do it!

AWESOME! Any sort of activity you and your son can do together is worth doing. I will be teaching my son to swim as soon as the summer comes around, but only because there arnt indoor pools where I live. He'll be 10 months old. However, I dont think that 6 months is too young, and if it was I dont think that it would be offered to infants that age. Ive read that learning to swim a long with doing lots of other physical activities can help instill a healthy active mindset in babies, helping ensure that they will continue to be physically active as they grow older. Also, any new learning will help develop a childs mind and put him a step ahead of the rest.
Not to mention the bonding that will be going on between the two of you.

I enrolled in mommy and me swim lessons with both my children.

My son was 6 months old and was way too young to "swim" but it was fun swimming with him at such a young age. My daughter started the classes at 6 months and we continued for almost 18 months and she was trained to hold her breath (natural instinct) and still enjoys the water, now years later.

Good Luck! If anything it will be a great chance to take pics to scrapbook!

He should be fine at 6 months. But I agree with the other parent who said to take them to the pool on your own. My son was in swim lessons at 14 months and it really wasn't differnt than if we had been going to the pool ourselves. The instructor teaches the older kids/parents how to do specific techniques...at 1 year, we couldn't tell our son to do it..he didnt' know what it was. At 6 months your child won't know the differece.

The pool is lots of fun and my son really liked it (he's always enjoyed water with baths ect)...so I'd suggest just taking him swimming at open swim in the shallow end. That way your not confined to a time limit either and if your son gets cold you can leave earlier than planned with out feeling guilty.

We started at about 14 months, and my son loved it. They are others i the class that were about 6 months. Some like it and some didn't. A lot of parents dont like the techniques that they use to teach a child to swim. Take him...he may like it or may not. Son't be afraid of putting them under water either. The more you are upset the baby can sense it and be upset as well. My son is now 27 months and is like a fish and holds his breath and puts imslef under water.

I did the Mommy and Me swim lessons with my son and it was great! He loved it and now that he's older he's not afraid of the water like a lot of children his age. Definitely a good thing to do! You could also look into Mommy and Me Yoga classes or infant classes at Little Gym. Good luck.

i think he'll love it. i started my son at about the same age and we had the best time. by the time he was ready for regular swim lessons(on his own) he had no fear and became quite a good swimmer.(he's 18 now)sign up! you'll have a great time.
p.s.- i don't mean the kind where they put the baby in the water face down and expect him to float! i'm talking about the classes were both of you are PLAYING in the water together. the other is just dangerous and stupid.

I took my son to a swim class when he was about 11 months old last summer and he liked it a lot. Of course, when they are young, you will be holding on to them while they splash around and kick in the water. For wintertime, you may want to check your local rec center for classes or go to the library for story time.

It will be fun for you two, but I suggest just going to the pool on your own. At 6 months he won't be able to comprehend what's going on nor will he remember anything. My daughter loves the pool but it would just be a waste to spend money on something he won't benefit from. Other fun things we do are go to the Gymboree gyms (not the store) and to the Chuck E Cheese baby area. He's 6 months old so he's limited on what he can do.

I have never taken the classes, but I have heard that babies as early as 6 months can be taught to float so if they fall into water they won't drown. This would be good to lessent he worry. I think it is a good idea to do things together, helps with the bonding. So I say try it, if you don't like it you can always stop. Good Luck
