I was diagnosed today (Tues 1-2-07) with mono. Do you think I would be able to go bowling on Sat? What about ice skating on Sunday? Thank you.

First of all, sorry about your diagnosis; not a great way to begin 2007. :(. You really do need to take it easy while your body is fight off this virus. Fatigue associated with mono is different from person to person. May doctors will tell their patients they can do whatever they feel they have the energy to do (has your doctor told you you can't go to school?). The more rest you get, the faster you will feel like your old self. While mono is very common (and most people recover completely and without effect), there are cases of mono which can become quite severe and affect the liver and the spleen. Your spleen generally enlarges with mono, making it more susceptible to injury. There is risk with both bowling (heavy lifting and throwing) and ice skating. Better to have friends come in and watch TV,play games, or go to the movies. Again, the more rest you let your body have the better you will feel, and sooner! Good luck!

You need to ask your doctor what the restrictions are. My son had mono when he was a teenager and he was very sick. He slept for 7 days in a row. He only woke up to eat and go to the bathroom. When you have mono there is a greater risk of your spleen rupturing so the Dr would not allow him to do any of the activities that you were asking about. Also mono is very contagious, so be very careful around other people.

Bowling yes. Ice Skating....probably no.

In many people who have mono, the spleen gets very swolen and in that state it is more easily ruptured. Contact sports like football and basketball must be avoided. Bowling is not a contact sport, but ice skating (if you fall) could put you at risk.

Rupturing a spleen causes a person to bleed internally, without immediate surgical intervention a person can bleed to death inside.
