I`m looking for a good scope for target shooting up to 500 yards, one that will hold a good zero. Will be used on a Ar-15,223.

Well your choice of scope mounts (rings, bases, and or rail) will be just as important, if not more important, to your scope's ability to hold zero than the choice of scope itself.
I would also advocate a Weaver rail whenever possible due to the ability to mount a different optic, like a red-dot, if the need or want ever arose.
As far as optics and mounts go it is hard to go wrong with Leupold, pricey, but worth it.
Variable power 3-9x should prove adequate for most ranges although if 500 yards or so would be your normal distance instead of your extreme, a 6.5-20X, or 6-24X may prove more useful and worth the extra price in the long run.

Is this a flat top AR or one with the carrying handle?

If flat top, than almost any decent scope will work. However, a 500 yard range is the ragged edge of the caliber's accuracy. The bullet is too light to be dependable at that range.
If cost is a consideration a bushnell or simmons are reasonable choices. I'd recommend a variable up to 12 power.
If money is not object, my buddy has a Nikon on his AR and loves it. The $500 price tag was too rich for me.

With the carrying handle your options are very limited. There are mounts for the handle but I've never seen a satisfactory one.

I ran into this problem with my AR. I bought another upper with a flat top just to mount a scope on.

simmons aetec 2.8x10x40.
i have that same scope mounted to my .308 and had it on my .300wsm.it can be purchased for about $200,maybe a tad more.

i consistantly shoot shot groups 1 1/2 or less at 100 yds. with that scope.it seems to hold zero pretty good.of course my groups would be tighter if i pay more attetion to the fundamentals of shooting.
