transmission of energy. ie power plant changes oil into electrical energy whis is then transported over electrical power lines to a home or business and then changed into heat or light energy.

Electricity has no "purpose." In what use electricity is involved is another matter. For instance you might say; residential construction is designed in such a way as to make use of electricity for the modern conveniences of man. In this context, the purpose of electricity is not for the modern conveniences of man but the purpose of the design of the building is to include electricity. Simple, huh?

Electricity is a natural phenomenon. Man has a purpose in harnessing it, but by itself, it has no "purpose"--it just exists, like wind, or water.

To power everything on this planet. Imagine where we would be without it. Without electricity we would be lost. It warms our food, charges our electronics, keeps foods cold, the list is endless. I hope that I'm reading your question the way you intended it to be read.
