I'm looking for a basic cocktail drink. Something before dinner or at cocktail parties. I want something more sophisitacted than beer, more manly than wine (both of which I enjoy). I have tried a couple of Gin martinis and Vodka martinis, but I don't really like them.

Crown Royal is exceedingly good but I would suggest Royal Crown Cola with it, if anything. 7UP is more for Seagrams 7.
Can't go wrong with Rum and Coke
Gin and Tonic is an aquired taste.
Vodka and cranberry juice is easy to drink
Whiskey sours are good and fairly simple.

I would suggest Gin & Tonic, a true gentlemen's drink. You didn't like gin martini's (you damn communist jerk) but you might like the gin & tonic. Make sure to use as high of quality gin as possible. Nothing less than Tanqueary and also use plenty of lime.

You also can't go wrong with a good scotch on the rocks.

A good drink to have that is still masculine, is not embarrasing to order (i.e. fuzzy navel, sex on the beach), but has enough sweetness to enjoy is good old Captain Morgan and Coke. (ordered as, "captain and coke") Good luck . . .nancy boy!! j/k

my husband drinks...
scotch on the rocks
vodka or gin & tonic with a twistt
a top shelf tequila straight up
tom collins
chimay (belgian beer) even though you said not beer, it's much more flavorful and stronger than house beers.

he is manly :)

Try some of the various whiskeys on the rocks. Have you tried microbrew beer? Much more sophisticated than Bud or Coors.

Try chocolate martini's, very yummy. Be careful not to drink too many or you may end up on your *ss. (they can be a good thing, depends on whose at your dinner party) :)
