I am trying to write a press release for a friend who imports really excellent french wines - the angle of the story is "10 things to do with the nasty wine you were given for Christmas" - I only have 5 at the moment which include potting cheese, sweating out a cold and making mustard! Any ideas most appreciated xx

White wine makes an excellent glass cleaner, especially when used with newspaper, rather than a cloth or squeegie. The alcohol content of most white wines is also high enough to be used to wash and sterilise wounds.

Red wine contains substances with antioxidant and exfoliating properties, and so can be very good for the skin and complexion. Try soaking large spinach or tea leaves in the wine overnight for a cheap and effective facepack (though I'd advise washing thoroughly afterwards to prevent the 'old soak' aroma).

Hope this helps

Yes, and it can even be sparkling as the gas is cooked out in a very short time. Whatever you have to hand. A cheap lambrusco is good for red (not too acidic) and a chardonnay for white. By the time wines have been properly cooked (reds need to be especially cooked out) then you've changed the original flavour of the wine anyway. Alcohol is burnt off and so there's no point in picking a fine wine for cooking. Cooking wines however are just horrible.

Use the red to make mulled wine, the white to liven up fruit salad. Both can be added to preserves or fruit to make boozy jam or you can make wine sorbet. You can also freeze either in a plastic cube container and use the cubes as you need in cooking when you do not have a bottle at hand.
White wine is the best remedy to lift red wine stains from fabrics.

I reckon most people have used this one if there are a few extra bottles of really cheap wine around. If red wine is spilled you can use a large amount of white wine to get most of the red off a white carpet, I have tried it and it does work.

Libation. This is a ritual pouring of a drink as an offering to a god. It was common in the religions of antiquity, including Judaism.

Dying the sweater you always get for Christmas and hate.

Give it to your boss to show your appreciation for the measly christmas bonus you were given.

Give it to your boss to show you have no hard feelings because you were passed over for that promotion (again).

You'd certainly make some street corner wino's day if you regifted it to them.
