Dawkins addresses this matter, and much more, in his most interesting book.

First of all, pharaoh did NOT have sex with Sarah, although he wanted to. The disease that befell him prevented him from doing so.

As to whether Abraham lied or not is a matter for discussion. Abraham was Sarah's uncle, ie the daughter of his brother Haran (Sarah and Iscah (jessica) are one and the same). The way family relationships were described in those days, a niece, especially one who's father had died, was often referred to as a sister. So Abraham used this loophole because he feared for his own life, reasoning that if they presented themselves to the Egyptians as husband and wife, the Egyptians would kill him and take Sarah. As a 'sister', Abraham would need not be killed and he would then have the opportunity to rescue her should the worst befall them.

So, what was pharaoh's sin? Pharaoh, even though he was the most powerful man alive, still should have inquired into Sarah's availability to wed, offering her 'brother' Abraham a suitable amount for her, as was done at the time. Instead, Pharaoh abused his power and was punished....but in a way so as to prevent a much worse situation.

And isnt it odd that this Abraham fellow, who is oh so holy in God's eyes, is running around with his wife and purposely fooling others about her being his sister? He did this not only to the Pharoah, but to another character as well. Whats up with that???

Unless, of course, Abraham and Sarah were a couple of swingers. That would make sense....

And, for the record, I predict you are either not going to get a response, or you are going to be told that it was punishment without anyone making the realization that it was Abraham's fault in the first place....
