I'm happy to do all the touristy stuff, but would like an area with a bit a character too. My preference would be for somewhere with a more "indie" relaxed feel, with some decent bars etc.

Any hotel recommendations would be appreciated too!

I think anyplace in the East or West Village would be great. Anything below/around 14th Street. You will have access to trains to get around easily, and it will not be as cookie-cutter/touristy as staying in Midtown.

There are also several B&B's located in Chelsea, which would also be a great place to stay - lots of bars and restaurants to choose from.

You might also want to check out the downtown Financial District. It is very busy during the weekdays, buy really quiets down for nights/weekends. There are lots of small cool bars in the area, especially some of the older historical places like Fraunces Tavern and Ulysses.

Do a good search for bed and breakfasts. My daughter and I spend a week in a basement walk in on 9th, right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. We felt like natives. Many apartments or rooms are available - you just have to search. The Grammercy Park hotel is downtown and supposed to be neat if you want a hotel.

East Village. Very hip but laid back. Easy to access all other parts of the city. It's way cool.

East Village is where you need to be. Go on craigslist.org and find someone who will rent their apartment to you. My boyfriend and I do this all the time and it's more comfortable and cheaper than hotels.
