My computer with its new mother board, got a worm for the first time ever. Had to go spend a grand on a new set up. The very first thing the tech asked was "Been using Yahoo Answers, huh?"
He told me it was full of people doing stuff like that. There at FRYS, a third of their business is repairing worms (when possible) and selling new boxes when they can't. What gives?

With all due respect, you went out and spent $1,000 on a new computer simply because you picked up a worm?

You don't know very much about computers do you?

Or you are making this up...

At best the tech would have had to gone into Windows .INI and your IE Explorer file to delete a few files, or at worst it would have required a reformating, but no one junks a computer because they pick up a worm...

And yahoo anwers isn't any different than surfing any other "normal" website. There's nothing here that would cause a computer user any greater chance of picking up a virus.

You do have a fire wall and anti virus software, don't you?

Personally, your description of the conversation between you and the tech at Fry's is so off-base, either you made this all up, or the only requirement to become a tech at Fry's is to be able to properly install a floppy disk in the floppy drive.

And that's highly unlikely, so you know what I think...

"Had to go spend a grand on a new set up"
Why? If you got a worm, just remove it with anti-virus/anti-spyware. Or reformat in worst case. Total cost: $0. What aren't you telling us here?

"The very first thing the tech asked was "Been using Yahoo Answers, huh?""
Are you pulling this out of thin air? What does visiting a website have to do with getting a worm? If you're just repeating what the tech told you, you got scammed.

"a third of their business is repairing worms (when possible) and selling new boxes when they can't."
They sell a new box when they can't repair a worm? Are you serious? It's like saying, my car tire is completely bust, I'll get a new car. The worst case scenario should be a wipe followed by a format, which costs no money but destroys everything on the computer.

"What gives?"
If the techs made you buy a new box, you got scammed seriously. The software to remove worms is free. The software to wipe is free. And you just need the XP CD to format/reinstall, which you should have had anyway, right? Or even if you didn't want XP, Linux is free. $0.
