My family history is so lost by people moving & not keeping records. I believe I am Potowanomi, Wisconsin. I need to find out for my own peace and a place to start from to trace my heritage. Thanks to all who answer.

Hey Cyn,

Get your parents birth Certificates, that will list their parents. Then get their Birth, Death, and Marriage certificates. Interview any living relative. Basic Genealogy stuff first. Then you have the information to go back to the ancestors, keep working backward in time one person at a time.

DNA - Many are reputable. The bad ones do not say around for long. Here are some sites for you to look at. Personally, Family Tree projects work really well, they post to more global projects for small fee and no retesting.

Reputable Dna Testing

If your parents are native, even half, you WOULD be considered native, but unless they were enrolled members of a tribe, you would not be an enrolled member.

Tracing the places you family lived, will give you an idea of what kind of Native American you are.

Going back thru census records, and then tribal rolls will also help.

The first step is to get started on your genealogy, working from yourself back, then any records you find, might tell you if they were native or not.

DNA testing might tell you if you have the dna of a certain tribe, but will not be used for enrollment purposes. Only an ancestor enrolled on one of the roll will be able to help you there.
