She broke up with him before Christmas and he still gave her what he had gotten her. She doesn't feel like she should give it to him. Both gifts are fairly expensive.

Horribly awkward... but no, I don't think 'she' is obligated to give her gift to him.

He chose to give a gift despite the break up... she initiated the breakup but is not obligated to give a gift.

She might consider returning the gift she was given to end any obligation within the relationship. Making it very final.

No I think she should tell him that she is uncomfortable with still exchanging gifts. She should offer to return his gift to her but if he is a decent guy at all he would let her keep it! I guess without knowing the logistics of the break up you can only assume that both parties are decent people that have just moved on. If they want to remain friends they could still exchange gifts but if they want nothing to do with each other, tell her to give his present back and move on! Good luck!

She isn't obligated to give a gift - ever. A gift is a gift...not a requirement. Especially since they are broken up, there is not an obligation. I would return the gift. If she wanted him to have it, she wouldn't be thinking it over.

She isn't obligated but sounds like to me a little selfish, bratty & etc....If he gave her the gift he bought her for heavens sake why not just give him his gift also?

Because he gave you the gift he bought you doesn't mean you have to give him the one you bought. Don't feel guilty, give the gift to someone who really deserves it and move on with your life.

Definitely not. My ex and I had the same exact situation. I gave my gift, but I did not obligate her to give hers. She didn't give it by the way.

After reading others, I do believe maybe if they feel guilty they should offer a return.

if she accepted the gift he gave her, even though they had broken up, then yes she should give him the gift she purchased for him
otherwise, she should return the gift she received from him, then not give a gift to him

If she doesn't want to give him a gift, she should return the gift that she received. It should be a mutual thing.

I think the decent thing to do would be to return the gift he gave her.
