Not only did I lose all of my icons, I also lost "Start". What do I do?

Try seeing if safe mode will work.
Turn of the computer.
Turn it back on and tap f8 until the advanced options menu comes up
select safe mode with the arrow keys
press enter
press enter again
choose any name you want on the next screen
see if the start button appears
if it does, try clicking start, then gonig to all programs, accessories, system tools and system restore.
Walk the computer back a day or so in system restore and see how that looks =D

Right click an empty spot on your desktop, choose- Arrange Icons By, then put a check, next to Show Desktop Icons..

In safe mode if you can get there run a SFC in command prompt, if it asks you for a switch do sfc /? and it will give you a list of switches to use, find the one that does a scan of all system files immediately and type sfc /(switch name)..
