It wasnt. Read Article 11 of the Treaty with Tripoli 1796.
America was founded by Puritans who were escaping religious persecution in England in the late 17th century. Not Christians. Our forefathers were Masons who worshipped a figure called Baphomet, not Jesus Christ. And, they STRONGLY beleived in a separation of Church and State, and wrote it into our Constitution.
Christians in the 1950's, scared by the Communists and McCarthyism, put God into our Pledge and onto our Money.
Its high time it gets removed.

No, the god of which you speak is the "prince of this world", the devil. That god is the one many are trying to put on the throne of this country.
The God in which the founding fathers of this nation believed is in oppostion to your god:
John 10:9-10
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
(from New International Version)

Because they're trying to reshape history to fit their own agenda, just like many are trying to reshape the present to fit their own agenda about some kind of rapture that's not going to happen. Their so steeped in their own ignorant self-concept and ideas that they can't see the forest for the trees. I'm an American and it's getting damned tiring to watch.

Obviously, it isn't, even though religious ideas were important in its history. Read the last phrase of Article VI of the Constitution of the United States.

No, not the Muslem god, the True God. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. I pray that some day you may experience His love. YBIC

No the revised god of love, mercy and turn the other cheek. It's a shame they have never done any of that throughout their history.

I think Chris Rock said it best, about the inscription "In God We Trust" on the Dollar.
"I was looking for God and he was in my Pocket"
