My dad grew up on a dirt farm in North Texas, and although he went on to become a University President, he never lost the colloquialisms he picked up as a child. He used to say things to me like, “They feed pigs, but they slaughter hogs,” or, “You’ve got champagne taste and a beer pocket book.”

My father’s been gone almost twenty years now, but my own son is now 13 and I hear myself saying things that my dad used to say to me. I know that more and more young people are growing up in nontraditional homes these days, but I also know I’m not the only one that opens their mouth only to hear their parents’ voice.

What's wrong with what your dad said? The first quote simply means that when the animal is killed, a term is used for the animal that helps in detaching from the idea that you are killing a living animal, since "hogs" carries a more negative connotation than pigs. It's the same thing as "buying a home" and "selling a house" (realtors use these phrases, "house" is less personal than "home", "home" implies more memories and is harder to let go of, so it's not used when selling). The second phrase is one of my favorites. It's just saying "stop living beyond your means". I'm sure you know these meanings, and they are good lessons to learn. So what's the problem.? Is it just because they sound a little backwoodsy?

I think it is great and these quips are not anything to be ashamed of, your son will carry these onto his children also.
