This was told to me by a Christian and I was quite taken aback. Thousands of people were not only crucified but tortured in unspeakable ways throughout history.
Why is it important to think Jesus suffered more? What is it? A competition?
Was Jesus drawn and quartered, put in an iron maiden, hung then disemboweled, burned alive? Thousands of people died far worse deaths.....

Yes. He suffered the sins of mankind, not only physically, but spiritually as well. He suffered the ultimate burden, he was separated from God. Most focus on the physical aspect but no one really knows what was going on beyond that. Maybe there's a reason he "died" the same day he was crucified when people normally last for days on the cross. I sincerely doubt the crucifixtion was the worse form of "torture" Jesus endured.

Jesus was a perfect man, he willingly gave his innocent life to atone for Adam's sin fo all time. The perfect man Adam sinned and brought sin into the worl, and Jesus gave his life to provide a way out. He was unjustly beaten and he suffered a horrible death, im sure he was in a great deal of pain, but the point is, it does not matter if he suffered more than anyone else. the thing that should be focused on is how we show appreciation for his suffering and death. Jesus knew that he would be humiliated and tortured, he wasnt surprised when they flogged him and hung him on the torture stake. He endured those things for us. and Jehovah his father paid a price too, to watch his innocent son suffer and die. Yet people ignore Jehovahs warnings to take advantage of the ransom. The people in Noah's day did the same, will you go on eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, will you take no note until this system of wickedness ends? You have opportunity to do so now. Jesus would be glad to clooect you under his wings.

It's not a competition, but he did suffer more than anyone ever has. To understand (if it's really possible) the depths of Jesus' suffering, we must understand the heights from which he came and who he was.

Obviously his physical suffering was great. Not only were nail driven into his hands and feet, the crucifixion was designed to cause slow, torturous asphyxiation ( not able to breathe). He was in extreme pain, but the bodies strong desire to breathe caused him to push up from his feet to get every breath. This went on for hours. And before all this happened he was beaten to a pulp. He was abloody mess. His beard was pulled out in chunks. The stuck a very pointy crown of thorns on his head hard enough to make him bleed even more.

Besides all the physicl pain was the mental anguish. He was God. He knew no sin, yet was bearing the sin of the entire world. I don't understand all the implications of that, but something tells me that that part of the crucifixion was more painful than the physical part.

So, no, it was not a competition.

If you believe that he actually existed. Here is the point I make in that regard. Pontius Pilate, the guy that had him executed, is referenced in several different sources other than the Bible during that time. Chances are fairly good that he was an actually living person. Other than the Bible, there are not many references at all to Jesus on record. Most of the references to him other than the Bible were written long after the events of his life. To me, this is staggering considering his impact even at that time. If I was there when he was crucified and the sky turned black and it proved to me he was the true messiah, I would have run straight home and written up a storm. That's just my opinion. I'm sure I'll get lots of thumbs down from those that believe, but it's the way I feel about the subject.

Jesus did suffer more, not only physically, but mentally. There are some people who may have suffered more physical pain, such as St. Peter, who was crusified uspide down, But Jesus' pain was still worse. From the moment of the Agony in the Garden, Jesus saw every single sin the had been comited, was being commited at that momment, and will be commited in the future. He saw the sins we will do in the future, and what sins our chidren will commit. Seeing those sins put Jesus in a horrible pain, worse than any physical pain. For this reason alone (our sins) is the entire reason Jesus died on the cross, to let us know He loves us as his children, more than anything, and that he Forgives us.

I agree with you that others have suffered far worse deaths and some with terrible diseases and conditions suffer through their entire lives. If Jesus was a divine being (God/son of God) and knew it then he knew his suffering was transitory and to be followed by immortality and glory then what kind of sacrifice was that really. I know real people who have suffered worse for less. What would the length of time that he actually suffered be to an immortal being? Nothing, less than the blink of an eye for us. Of course, he didn't have to go through it at all if he chose (if you believe the whole story) but if there really was such a thing as immortal Gods it might just be a tempting change of pace to try on being mortal and human for awhile and experience the range of emotions and feelings. Hardly a huge sacrifice. Then again why God would require the torture and death of his son in order to forgive people for being as frail and faulty as he designed them to be is a bit weird to me as well.

You are absolutely, completely 100% correct. Lots and lots of people have suffered far worse than Jesus did. That is not to diminish the sacrifice of Jesus, but to hold Jesus out as someone who made a greater sacrifice than many, many other people is simply not fair to all those other people who gave them self for the benefit of civilization and human kind.

Yes because of WHO HE WAS which makes it even more important.

God the Flesh (Jesus Christ/Immanuel/God be with us) died for his people. Jesus was killed unjustly. Jesus walked the earth as a perfect and faultless human being. Mankind is full of sin but Jesus became flesh and never sinned.

Jesus was the chosen flesh/outfit for God the Spirit to manifest into.

Other people who may have been burnt to death, decapitated, disembowled etc committed atleast 1 sin in their lives. Jesus never did therefore His death was the worst because there was no reason for his death. Death has the authority over sin but Jesus humbled himself to death which He truly didnt deserve.

Jesus suffered ...the bible says his body was marred more than any other...Isaiah 52:14..only one other man suffered ...although his body was not marred as much as Jesus...

What The Lord has me allowed me to see is...the purpose in which each man suffers...With Job who suffered more than any man ..in that all his possesions were taken ..his family(children) were killed...his health was stricken..and his freinds accused him......it would appear that his suffering was the greatest..his purpose was to be an example to all men of the refining process we all go through... BUT...with Jesus...even though He went through being crucified and was tortured by having his beard ripped from his face..he was spit on stripped of his clothes..a crown of thorns 1 to 3 inches long was given 39 lashes with a catanine tails...(a whip with bone and weights) that rip and tear the skin each lash..he was nailed with rusty spikes....pierced in his side...and was hung for 3 hours to drain him dry of blood...and more worst than all of that ....the presence of God he always knew...was taken..And that I believe was more unbearable than the torture...you may not understand that part if you you ave never known the presence of God in your life..His purpose was to save the world...I think a very powerful reason..

So no it may not be like being burned or raped.....but think about it ...He was a man who had no sin..and could have called for a million angels to come rescue him...but He laid down his life...seeing that he had NO sin...he could have lived forever...Romans 6:23 says the wages of sin is death...BUT..he had no sin...so..you weigh the difference...
