That's a great question. I agree with another poster - I think the heart, mind and spirit are all inter-connected, so, to me, happiness could begin at any 'point' within the heart, mind or spirit.
I think it's just important that happiness begins period, not so much where it begins. I can't imagine how our lives would be without it. It wouldn't be living at all - just existing.

That's like asking does feeling begin in the fingers, the palm, or the hand. The heart and mind are faculties of the spirit part of you, the soul. To answer your question, it begins in soul. True happiness is using your faculties in your soul to the fullest, which would be knowing and loving something infinitely.

Abraham Lincoln said that a man is about as happy as he decides to be. I'd guess that it's a decision.
But it also is too dependent on happenstance. You can't be happy when things are going wrong. But you can be joyful despite your circumstance. Joy is based in the Spirit.
