It is an excellent idea to start looking at hotels now for next New Year, as prices do rise to some very very high levels for those near Time Square.
I have stayed at a couple of hotels in the area, the prime one being the Marriott Times Square, this hotel is the closet to the proceedings and rooms can go big bucks, as my contact within the hotel told me people generally hire the room and have parties in the rooms for friends and family.
I have also stayed at Hotel 41 and found this an ideal location for Times Square and this affordable boutique hotel offers excellent accommodations at a great price.

The Marriott Marquis is HUGE, so you might have a good chance of getting a room there.
The W Times Square is also right in the middle of Time Square, and they have very cool rooms.
Across the street there is a DoubleTree Suites. A little further uptown is the Crowne Plaza Times Square which is located right above the Hershey Store and across from the new M&Ms store.
Over on 9th Avenue, the new Westin is really nice, and has only been open for a year or two. It is not right in the middle of Times Square, but very close by.

The Casablanca is on W. 43rd Street just about 100 ft east of Times Square. It's a small boutique hotel. There's a free continental breakfast in the A.M. and wine and cheese in the afternoon. The staff is superb.
The cost is about $300 a night; taxes are extra.

The W Times Square. It's an ultra-cool ultra-modern hotel right in the heart of the city. I've never stayed there, but I've been in the lobby, on the seventh floor, a whole bunch of times, and it's awesome. However, it is pretty pricey.

I've stayed many places there. My favorite is Marriot Times Square, AND Renissance! Both in Times Square, and great hotels. But they are both a pretty penny. Its NYC, do it right, and you are walking distance to everything. Statue of liberty and ground zero is a freaking far walk, i found out the hard way
