The question is like comparing apples to volkswagons. A .223 is a great varmit round and with proper loads (and gun configuration) can be an adequate self-defense weapon. A .270 is a flat shooting hunting round that can be used on game up to the size of elk. Both are accurate and ammunition is plentiful. A .270 is not an arm killer in recoil and for anyone who shoots, it is generally considered 'mild'. If a .223 kicks, you won't be comfortable shooting a air rifle. A .223 is a completely different class of ammunition than a .270 as far as its usefulness. A good compromise between the two is the .243 and the 25/06.

First, of course the 270 is gonna have a little bit more recoil than the 223. Recoil would not be a factor for me the factor would be what your going to use this rifle for. Varmits-223, Deer and other large species-270. Both these guns are very straight and fast shooters but the 270 is obvisouly going to have more knockdown power. Personally I love the 223 caliber.

Depends if I was looking at a rifle only for hunting, and therefore bolt-action, I would choose the .270, which I have owned previously.
For an all around rifle I would choose a .223. If white-tail deer is the largest game you would plan on hunting the .223 will prove adequate.
The recoil is noticeable yes, but not enough to be a deal breaker, but recoil rarely is.

I would take a .223 because it is more versatile. The .270 is a hunting caliber only. The.223 is a hunting/sniping/target/miltary shell. This means that it is also noticeably cheaper. However, one must realize that if hunting is sole purpose and you are not varminting, then you might just want that .270.

I would say slightly more noticeable. I would take the .270 because I hunt deer and large game more often than anything smaller. Although I would like to get a .223 (or .25-06 or 6mm) for coyote, etc.
