Generally I would say no, I have been a bartender and waitress all of my life . But I have on occasion, when the person was extra nice and courteous or I had put in an extra large to go order left them a tip. Its definitely a judgment call on your part, but its not expected from the server.

I bartend, and it is not customary, unless you are sitting at the bar having a few drinks while you order/wait for the food. Then you should tip on the drinks, and maybe an extra dollar or two for the food.

If you are just calling in an order, it is not customary, although when I DO get tipped on a carry out, I don't complain.

Depends. If I have to pick up the take out myself than no I don't tip. Nobody did any type of service for me. Granted the cook made food but that is why I paid for food in short I paid them money already to make the food. Now if someone is delivering it to me yes I will tip them but it all depends on how quickly they get there and the temp of the food when it gets there. The last time I ordered pizza, they told me it would take 45 minutes to get there. I usually give them a 15 minute lee way but no they should up a good 45-60 minutes after the estimated time. Our food was lukewarm. I did not tip.

It is customary to leave a tip to wait staff. A waiter or waitress works for both a salary and tips, and infact the tip is considered a part of his/her salary. The person working at a take out window is usually working for at or a bit above minimum wage and is not usually expected to make part of their income in tips. From there, it is your call. A tip is just an acknowledgement of good service.

For me, it depends on how I am treated and what I am buying.
For example- I frequent a local fast-food Chinese restaurant. The owners know me by sight and put in "extras" in with my order. I put a $1 in their jar. The staff there stands all day and in most cases, most of the night, too. They are preparing food over hot stoves and it's very hot in the kitchen. So, I think a $1 is a 'modest' way of me thanking them for "fussing" over me.

If I go to a fast food burger place, I don't leave tips. (there isn't a jar to tip in, most of the time). I know the staff who works in these restaurants work hard and conditions are not the best. I suspect that the 'corporate' people frown on tip jars.

I hope this answers your question.

Absolutely. I always do, whether I'm eating in or out. It's not required, but even if you just leave a couple of dollars it's a nice thing to do. Most of the people working in take-out work just as hard as waiters and waitresses do, and are sometimes (like at a pizza place) even busier than the waiters and waitresses!

It is absolutely not customary to leave a tip at a restaurant when just getting take out. Especially if they just have tip jar's. I hate those tip jar thing's they should be illegal.

Americans do have such a great sense of humor! The more personal touch would be for you to put the tip in your security officer's waistband. A tip jar would be impersonal after such an intimate experience..

I usually leave a couple of bucks, depending on the tab total and how many special requests I made. Its sort of like tipping at a buffet... they didn't do a whole lot but without them it would have sucked! (And I mean take-out from Chili's or something, not McDonalds!)

it is not customary to leave a tip when getting just take out. they did not serve you as far as taking order, getting drinks, etc. but if you feel you really have to, then go ahead, but i wouldn't leave a tip and i don't leave a tip if it is just take out.
