I think it does. Those who feel there is a better life beyond this have no concerns for the environment, global warming or helping the poor. During the dark years of the Reagan administration, his first Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, was quoted as saying we don't have to protect the earth or conserve resources, because "Jesus is coming soon to call home the righteous." If a statement like that doesn't chill your blood, you're not paying enough attention. There are people in our present government who see nothing wrong with Watt's point of view; you only have to look at their contempt for the Kyoto accords and their unwillingness to do anything about carbon dioxide pollution to know that. They pay a lot of lip service to global warming, but their main concern is oil company profits. Makes you wonder if their gods will allow them to take their money to heaven.

No. At least not for me. I believe in life after death, where everyone will be given a fair judgement on what he has done in his previous life. Believing in the afterlife makes me feel comforted, knowing that for whatever injustice I received from people right now, God will recompensate it later. the world is unfair, that is why God creates an afterlife.
I try to do anything with the end in mind. By the end,I mean the afterlife. Every moment I spend right now will determine where my afterlife will be, will it be in the Hellfire, or in the Paradise. It makes me treasure every second I have - I'll do even the smallest good deed, struggle with everything that I do, be it my studies or whatever - because those things help me to find way to Paradise.

There's something a little sick about behaving now because you hope to get a good afterlife?
Also, it does mean that some people live completely for what might be after rather than the now.
Don't gamble with this. Enjoy this life, be good to others and yourself and forget after the afterlife...
Sorry, I can't help myself...honestly! How arrogant of humans to think that we will have an afterlife!!! Do we really deserve one? I'm repeating myself but: we're nothing special.

No on the contrary because when one believes in afterlife and judgement day, he makes sure that every step he takes is towards goodness, kindness, moral prosperity, justice, love, charity, selflessness, and peace.
if everyone knew that he 'll never escape punishment for his evil deeds..- even if he did in this life- ,all will think twice before spreading murder, immorality, theft ,fraud ,hypocrisy, and deciet and this would be a better world!!

I would say no. Most who believe in an afterlife, also believe in living THIS life to the fullest and within the rules/laws of a higher power, man and nature. Doing so certainly would provide a satisfying and appreciated life on earth :-)

It depends on what you mean by "as good as it can be". Only God can grant you life everlasting which is obtained by the way you live your life on earth. If you strive to live right by God then afterlife will be granted. If you dont live right by God you have less of a chance to be granted the afterlife you talk about.

well, considering how often I have heard or read Christians saying not to worry about this world, because after the second coming there will be a new heaven and a new earth, I'd say it has given them a "Who gives a damn" view.
Me, I grew up believing that having dominion over the earth meant taking care of it, since that is what having dominion is.

No, believing in the after life inspires us to make this life better for ourselves and those who will be here after us. Since we know we will continue to live in the spiritual world after we die here, and we will be able to see the effects of what we have done here, we try to make what is here better.

Nelson Hello,
If what you say is true, then I would first like to know what 'making this life as good as it can be' entails? Is there something I don't get now that I need? Because I am a Christian am i missing out on something? DO TELL :)

If you live your life in the attempt to attain some sort of spiritual currency, then you are probably not living your life to the fullest. The spread of a limiting doctrine would also impede the enjoyment of this life.
