The Israelites were enslaved by the Egyptians. The Israelites are consider oriental, the Egyptians are African.
Most slave owners were British. They wanted to keep their slaves illiterate to control them. They would let them read the bible, because they thought they were all heathens. When actually, most of the slave owners were the heathens and if they had read their bible, and wanted to be a true christian, they would not have owned slaves.
It was a dark time in American history, and not really that long ago. 145 years since the Civil War started. Although it's better than it use to be, there are parts of the U.S., that are still very prejudice.

Evil men used a tool out of context, does thatt mean that the tool is bad? No. The bible does not condone or forbid slavery: I do no believe that God likes it, but that is beside the point. Look what hapenned because of it, slaves wrote many of the best hymns we have, and were legendary for their devotion to God in spite of their circumstances. This sounds like a rule the masters made for political reasons, their slaves are so well treated they *even* have access to the bible. The "Godly" people in the bible were more like many of the slaves, they served God in spite of the circumstances around them, and trusted in him, regardless of what people did to them. An Afro American should not be suspicious of the bible. Look at Job, the slaves could indentify with him. Although Satan (read the book, it wasn't God, like most people say) made many bad things happen to him, he kept his faith, and was rewarded for it in the end. Just because a tool is used wrongly doesn't mean it is a bad tool. A car that is used for a drive by shooting could still be a good car.

Go down, Moses,
Way down in Pharoah's land.
Tell old Pharoah, to let my people go.
It is for freedom that Christ has set you free.
Use not that freedom as a license to sin.
You shall know The Truth, and The Truth shall set you free.
The Biblical book of Philemon addresses the slave - master relationship more than any place else. Onesimus was a slave, and a believer, who escaped with stolen goods. Paul the Apostle encouraged him to go back and make things right with Philemon. Paul told Philemon to treat Onesimus as a brother not a slave. He a said, when he gets back, "receive him ... as a brother"; "treat him as myself" and "I will pay you for him whatever he owes you that he took." Does not sound like something that Simon La Gree would want his slaves or anyone else reading.
The Bible was used throughout the US in the 1800's as the main primer for learning to read, not just on the plantations. Those slaveowners who let their slaves read the Bible were the liberal ones, who wanted their slaves to be able to read.
That is just stupid to think if you learned to read the Bible you would not then be able read any other book in English, now isn't it? Who is feeding people this line of bull? Who are they themselves trying to control and enslave?
Lastly, color of the character is virtually never mentioned in the Bible. For all anyone knows, every major character in the Bible was black. Very rarely is any physical description mentioned for anybody, even Jesus.

Slaves were taught to read the bible so that they wouldn't run away and be good. What the slave masters forgot to mention to them was that back then, they believed that african-americans weren't people, and thus didn't have souls that could rise to heaven. So yeah, don't trust the bible

The slaves knew exactly what was up. The only book they can read is the one that talks about slavery...hmm. A lot of African-Americans have been attracted to Islam because of that.

The slaves should've read this verse from the bible. All slaves were to be set free every 50 years.
Leviticus 25: 10 And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family.

Religion begin when man came down out of the trees. It was one of mans first inventions. Don't blame religion on something that happened a century and a half ago. Blame it on what happened six million years ago. All religion is nonsense. As for your question being a violation it can happen to any question. Someone reports you Yahoo deletes the question and sends you a form letter. Nothing you can do just learn to live with it. xx

Slaves were not allowed to read at all. To say the Bible was the only book they could read is BS.
