I watch what I eat and exersise daily, but I only consume around 800 calories per day. Many web sites say that one should consume at least 1200 calories per day. Is 800 seriously not enough, or am I okay eating the way I do?

it is up to you to decide that
many people feel great with low calorie intake
to continue you really need to take a daily multivitamin and possibly other vitamin/mineral supplements such as calcium
make sure you get sufficient protein
make drinks using soy protein powder
make sure you are getting at least 60g protein daily and you probably need more due to your exercise
make sure you eat as soon as possible after your exercise session and try to consume a decent amount of protein within the first two hours after your exercise session
monitor yourself and see how you feel
feeling faint can be a problem
eventually you will probably want to increase your intake a bit
you have to be careful about keeping that valuable lean muscle that remains after you burned off all the fat
keep up the good work

800 calories is way, way too low. At your age you should at the very least double that amount, but the food you pick to eat is just as important. You must eat more fruits, veggies, and lean protein while avoiding sugar, fatty food or fried, white bread, rice, or pasta. However, 149 lbs, is not over the top for someone 5'6" unless you are terribly out of shape. Why not just exercise more and just get your body in better shape. Very important to know, however, that by keeping your calories so low, your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolism slows down. It is extremely difficult to get it back up again, so you are doing your body a disservice and making it harder on yourself.

No 800 is NOT enough. No way. You are starving yourself and if you are trying to lose weight, your body will hold on to it's stored fat so you won't lose ANYTHING. You should be eating between 1200-1500 a day. To maintain weight, you should be eating around 2000 a day. Just remember you have to be eating the right things. Just because you have at least 1200 calories in a day, doesn't mean it can be 10 Twinkies and a Coke.

800 cals isn't enough!! Espcially if you excercise.. 1200 is supposedly the minimum consumption, but typically the human body needs more (it really depends on your height/weight/age..). Don't you get very hungry sometimes? Your body isn't probably getting enough of the nutrients it needs.. :(

But when you do pile on the calories, do it in a smart way by eating HEALTHY, like a bed of salad w/ grilled chicken & more veggies, instead of a Big Mac meal @ McDonalds.

How to you get those 800 calories? If you are eating only veggies and fruits to get those calories its ok, cos your body is still working on metabolising the intake, but if its a liquid which is giving you 800 calories or if its high carb/high fatty food thats giving these 800 cals (juices and stuff) than you are risking reducing the metabolic rate of your body.
Your metabolism stays intact only if you eat something. And the best idea is to eat something thats very low in calories and high in water and fiber like cucumber, tomatoes, watermelon, raw papaya etc. By eating high density foods with no fiber or water your body needs less energy to digest these foods and hence it reduces your metabolism

Seriously that in not enough calories. You need to increase your calories before you do some serious health damage to your body. Also be sure you are taking a good multivitamin and a good antioxidant supplement daily to help boost your immune system. Increase your calories before something serious happens.

800 calories is not enough. See a nutritionist in order to get a healthy diet going. You're heading down the wrong street.

the amount of calories a day depends on your height, weight, amount of exercise and how healthy your lifestyle is. i think you can work out your amount of daily calories (you should be eating) by: weight in kg x 24 (girl) or 26 (guy). i think thats roughly right.

Just add 400 more calories to your diet. 800 isn't enough.

Well, it really depends on your needs and how balanced is your diet. (do you get enough high quality protein, vitamins, minerals, etc. ) Very likely not enough in any case, though.
