Way back many many years ago men had trouble keeping the top of their shirts closed because no one had thought to put a button there, Jacob MacDonald invented an apparatus that cinched to top of the shirt and also looked nice and he contacted the US Patent office and called his invention the string tie. Later on another Scotsman decided to enlarge the tie from a string tie to a wide tie to hide the buttons on a shirt. I sure hope this answers your question.

Wearing a tie looks good especially during special occassions like a party or holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas. A proper gentleman not only wears a tie,but knows how to make the knot for the tie.
I work as a security officer at a state employment agency and you'd be surprised at how people DON'T dress up for job searching. They come in with flip flops or t-shirts unshaven or with the whole gang of kids screaming at the top of their lungs.
A tie finishes the ensemble on a suit or just makes the shirt look better.

The tie is the latest form of the cravat, which developed in the days when showing any skin below the face (except possibly the hands, and even then women usually wore gloves in public) was unacceptable in European culture.
However; today it basically serves as a huge phallic symbol, hanging around the necks of men who want to symbolically let the world know they are in charge.
So, it has a symbolic use, but no real functional purpose.

It makes it easier to hang them when someone finds out they've been bad boys. Just find a place to string 'em up, and ya don't need to go lookin for a rope. Then again, it makes it easier for a woman to pull her man down into bed with her when she gets his pants off - just grab the tie and pull... thats about as good as I can come up with on the spur of the moment.... other than its just a cultural thing that has developed over hundreds of years of dress etiquite.... personally I wouldn't be caught dead in one, let them find their own rope and if the woman wants me on top of her in bed all she has to do is ask. This has been fun.

I think the tie was invented as a practical joke and then it back fired and wound up being a style for men to wear. I don't see how or why, I don't like to wear them, they make me feel like I'm being hung.

I also agree with Waalee, I have also heard that it was to hide the buttons. Now it is an opportunity to show off lovely silk and good taste if you have it.

It simply finishes out the suit; taking the place of a ribbon or sash from medieval times.
