Nike Air Pegasus is one of the most popular shoes for men (just look at what the runners wear at your next road race and you will see what I mean). Everybody is different, so to get the best shoe for you, I recommend that you go to a store that specializes in running shoes and gear, and get fitted for your feet and running style by a pro. You should bring your old running shoes with you so that they can evaluate the wear patterns on the shoes sole to determine your running style (neutral, overpronation, etc). If there is not a running shoe store near you (Fleetfeet, etc), try the Pegasus for a good starter shoe...they are really soft with great shock absorbtion, and an excellent neutral shoe. Good luck.

"Best" is relative. As John wrote, 2 of the top selling shoes are Asics and Brooks. Your best bet is to go to a running store, preferably not one of the big box sports stores in the mall, but a local running shop. A salesperson at your local running store is most likely an experienced runner them self. They sell shoes for for a living and are very qualified to recommend something for you. If you have an old pair of athletic shoes, or running shoe, bring them with you. Someone with experience will be able to tell what kind of runner you are by looking at the wear on your old shoes.
It took three brands of shoes to finally find my favorite. Are they the best? For me they are.

OK everyone will answer with their favorite brand. But the only way to find out is to get your feet checked out by a running shoe specialist.
Before I go into detail, by sales rates, the two 'best' running shoe brands are Asics and Brooks. The Asics Gt-2120 is the best selling shoe in America and is closely rivaled by the Brooks Adrenaline...If you have Medium to low arches its almost guaranteed you can run in that shoe. But let me be the first to tell you...YOU NEED TO GO TO A RUNNING SPECIALIST
The best thing to do would go to be fitted at a running store. They can look at your foot type and depending on what it is recommend some shoes. One with a high-arch will most likely be in a neutral cushion running shoe (asics-Landreth, Nimbus/ Brooks-radius,glcerin/ New Balance- 1060,801/ Sucony- ride/ Mizuno- wave rider, wave creation) Someone with a mid to low arch will most likely be in a stability shoe. These shoes have more support and help to keep your arch from collapsing. (asics-2120, Kayano / Brooks-Adrenalin)
As for size, each shoe is different. You must feel comfortable and have about a thumbnail of room in the toe box. New Balance and Sucony shoes tend to run wide, while Mizuno and Nike shoes tend to run narrow.
Your running shoes tend to be exactly ONE whole size bigger than your normal dress shoes. Also your feet swell throughout the day so at different times your size will be different. It is best to try on shoes mid-day/afternoon
I work in a running shoe store and could go all day about it.

From experience, I can tell you this is a totally individual thing based on your feet and your stride. When I started running, I bought what other people recommended but I did not realize at the time that I am a severe "supinator." This means I run primarily on the outside of my feet, but here I was wearing shoes designed to help you run MORE on the outside of your feet! I ended up spraining my ankle several times before being fitting with my current pair (Brooks Lady Dyad) which I love.
Go to a running store. The GOOD ones will have a treadmill with camera. They will have you run for a minute or so while they film your stride, then analyze your foot strike to recommend the right shoe for you. It's more about body mechanics than anything.
From my experience, these stores thrive on repeat business and customer loyalty so they aren't going to try to oversell you on an expensive shoe that doesn't suit you properly (unless you insist).
Here are a bunch of good articles ....

but you're better off going to a specialty shop and have them help you find the right shoe for you.

Asics.
Goto any running store and get properly fit, but more than likely you will find yourself in a pair of Asics.
Goto any road race (5, 10K, half/marathon) and you will see the elite runners as well as the weekend warriors run in Asics. Nikes and Adidas are all over too, but serious runners don't wear them.
New Balance if you have wide feet, but it all comes back to the company that invests the most in their R&D, and has the longest track record of success- Asics.

the best running shoes by far are Mizuno. I had them when I did road running. I put a thousand miles on a pair and they still didnt fall apart. They'll about 100 to 120 dollars but they are well worth it and last a very long time and are the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. You cant go wrong with them trust me.

even if you don't want to go to get your feet looked at, yoiu can'y go wrong with asics. because of the new gel system that they just came out with, it gives you maximum support on your feet, ankles, and shins. if you are going to be running on the road the whole time, shin splint will learn to be an issue for you. that's why if you go with asics, the maximum suppot will give you the confidence of a stress free run. Make sure though, when you have about 600 miles on your shoes, or they are totally ruined, make sure you buy new shoes or you will get hurt.

It depends on your feet, height, weight and running style. Personally I wear Nike Air Pegasus, although they seem to have changed the last with the latest versions so I might switch to something new when my current ones wear out.
Go to a good running shop like run and become, they'll assess your gait and recommend the best pair for you. Asics and Saucony are both good "runners" brands.

I agree with John b, everyone is different. also www.roadrunnersports.com ha s 30 day money back guarantee even if you wear the shoe outside. but defiantly go to a running store that will let you try them on a treadmill, some will let you run in the parking lot

Don't do a thousand odd miles like sugggested in the fifth answer!! You should log your miles and never do more than 150 miles in them. This is because the inside cushioning breaks down due to the shock and is not visible from the outside. So they might still look good on the outside but standby for injuries galore!
