I told a girl that I could see myself with her. She has been a friend for years and years. She asked what I wanted, and I said friendship. She then got closer to me over the last few months to the point where I think she was trying to get me to like her. There were some pretty obvious hints, and I backed off because she came so strong. Now, she treats me much differently and does not talk to me as much. Why does she treat me differently? How can I tell her I like her?

Well, didn't you make it pretty obvious to her that you weren't interested? So she took the hint. You need to make up your mind what you really want from her, and then be honest with her. There's no guarantee that she will feel the same way, but at least she won't be confused any more, and if you're lucky, she might be interested in you also.

From the statement above, it sounds like your really don't know what you want; you say you see yourself with her but don't pursue it, so she takes that at an obvious hint that you like her but are too shy or scared to follow through, so she advances and, in your opinion, comes on too strong so you back off. Of course she is going to treat you much differently and maybe cut off contact with you!
It sounds like your male pride was wounded because you didn't have guts nough to follow through on what you wanted the first time; if you are now saying you have the guts, follow through and be honest with her that the only reason you backed off was because you were too scared to take the first move and your pride got in the way when she advanced as you wanted to be the one to make the advances and maybe, just maybe, she will give you a chance.
If not, is it is time to move on and let her be until you know for sure what your really want.

Well you told her you wanted more than friendship....then basically told her you just wanted to be friends when she let herself get closer to you...She probably feels humiliated....and feels like you betrayed her in some way......you just need to tell her what you wrote here that you do really like her but you freaked out a little.....and see what happens

Walk up to her and tell her just that. You can not control what others do, only what you do. She may not respond, she may have moved on, but the only way you will ever know is if you just do it. No hesitation, no regrets, no worrys nor fears.......just tell her how you feel.

She gave you the chance and you missed. Now its your chance to woo her.Get close to her with all those pretty obvious hints and you will win her back.

She is probably hurt because she likes you and thought by what you said that you wanted more. You need to be honest with her about what you want.

She feels hurt. If you want a relationship with her, go for it. Otherwise, don't lead her on like that.
