Several months ago, we uncovered our Rosey Bourke Parakeets to find one of them dead in the bottom of the cage. Today, when uncovering our lovebirds, I found one of them dead. What could be the problem????

Also, there have been no problems in their behavior before covering them up for the night. How can they die so quickly?

Are they warm enough?
Are they near a plant that they could munch on? Do research on all your houseplants..many of them are toxic to birds.
What have you been feeding them..anything they didn't normally eat before? Avacados are toxic to birds.
Sorry about your tweeties!!! :(

There are many many reasons that could be causing this.

I would take the other love bird to the vet immediately. Have the vet do some bloodwork to eliminate any hidden disease or malady that may be affecting the birds that you cannot see.

With that being said, first of all, do you use Teflon cookware? If so, get rid of the Teflon. Do not cook with it. Also, if you use space heaters, make sure that the elements are not covered with Teflon. Something in the teflon causes birds to die. Cooking with Teflon is almost a death sentence to anyone with birds, especially larger birds such as parrots.

What kind of cleaning products are you using? Doesn't matter what part of your home you are using these cleaners in, certain cleaners such as bleach and other bleach based products can cause serious breathing problems & even death in birds. I only use apple cider vinegar to clean cages with. I've found that the birds can tolerate a floor cleaner called "Fabuloso" if I'm cleaning in another room. But I don't dare bring it up under or around them without plenty of ventillation.

Do your birds sit under/over a heating or cooling register? How about a ceiling fan? These are sources of problems for birds because air flow brings unseen bugs and bacteria, not to mention the draft involved that can cause a cold or even pneumonia. Once pneumonia sets in with a bird, there's no way to turn it back. On the first sneeze, I'd be seeing the vet.

There are so many other reasons that could be causing the deaths of your birds. My best advice is to see a qualified avian veterinarian as soon as possible so that he can eliminate, or rule out, what's not causing this problem. He can also advise you on possible sources.

Good luck.

Birds have very sensitive respritory systems. If you think it is related to the cover -
Does it have a smell?
Could there be mildew?
What have you washed it with?

Already mentioned here was teflon and candles/ scents (especially airwick. Have you started using any of these lately?
Are you sure the birds are free of mites or any other parasites?
If you feed seed (not the best choice) it can sometimes harbor a mildew that is bad for birds. Have you examined your seed?

Hopefully by know you have figured out that you cannot get a definative answer by this means. We just don't have enough information.

The answer-
Take the live birds and perhaps a dead one for examination to your AVIAN vet.

CALL A VET!!!

Seriously, you will not get a definative answer unless you contact a vet who will know what to look for. They may need to do a necropsy on the most recently deceased birds to see if it was an infection or anything communicable.

In the meantime, isolate the birds that were in contact with the birds that died from the others. This way if it was an infection, you might be able to keep it from spreading further. But you need to get a vet involved immediately.

Obviously somthing is wrong so have you been feeding them? at night they may fight ti`ll the other one is dead if there is any bleeding then they probally fight while you are asleep you need to watch your birds try getting one make sure you clean the cage leave water and food and all the basics because if you get two males or one female as a example they will kill each other over teratory and for the female i would stick with one bird to be safe.

Are they getting old? If not there is a lot of things that can make birds die like that. You need to make sure they are not anywhere that they will get a cold draft from a window or door. Also make sure their water is clean everyday and they have plenty of food... though I am sure you know that. you can also go to a pet store and get this thing you put on the outside fo the cage that is to help them from getting sick. I am not sure that it is called but it is a little white thing you hook to the outside of the cage. Try that maybe... good luck.

If you keep them in a special room like we do it may be mice or rats. I found my love bird on the ground dead once too. Otherwise, you probably want tocall a vet to come over to check on your birds and look if anything is causing them to die before more do.

Put the dead love bird in your fridge and ring vet ask if you can have a post mortem done on it,

Your flock could have a virus thats not visiable to the eye, atleast if u get a post-mortem done you know what it is and can act on it before they all die!

I wish I could say for sure. It is winter and so I wonder, do you have gas appliances? Maybe the air quality in your home is causing this to happen. Do you have trouble sleeping this time of year? If so, it could be the gas appliances in your home. I get an oily residue on everything in my apartment from using the gas stove and heater here and I find it hard to breath at times so check it out!

Birds die for a number of reasons. Any sort of infection can wipe out birds in no time flat. My suggestion would be contact a vet to see what they recommend.

Check temp, plants (if they are toxic), viruses, check for mites also.. Mites can kill a bird overnight, so can cold. Mites are serious, much more than they sound, I'd take them to a vet or at least call one to see if they can search the bird for mites, they are really hard to see yourself. Hope this helps some and your birds get better!
