Plenty of reasons.
1. Personality and social skills play a huge part.
2. The "pretty" girls may be choosier.
3. The "pretty" girls know they can get whatever guy they want, the less than cheerleader quality girls may want to work on a relationship rather than boy hopping.
4. Guys may see the pretty girls as unattainable.

If you are sending the wrong signals then that could be the problem. Some guys just automatically assume that good looking chicks are stuck up and move on for that reason alone. But do not worry because cute chicks usually don't have a problem getting noticed.

You can only look at how good the book cover looks before you want to read the great book. Maybe these so called not as pretty girls have personalities that attract their boyfriends. Not everyone is superficial

If a girl is good looking, some guys like myself are too shy to ask them out for fear of being turned down. You good looking girls have to make the first move.

Just goes to show that in the long run, it's really about personality. Plus, I think less prettier girls just settle with what they can get.

pretty girls tend to play 'hard to get' alot (which us guys hate), but it's not always like that, but most of the time in this case

they might be thinking that no one is good enough for them. thus, affecting their attitude towards people around them who are not as physically beautiful as them.
it might be because men are intimidated by their beauty so they prefer those who can make them feel safe and loved.
or it could be both.
