Why can't you get financial aid? Everyone is entitled to grants, scholarships and help from various government sources. Check with your college's financial aid department, and they'll help you get started with the fafsa forms, etc. (And there is nothing wrong with taking out loans for college!)
If you are still looking for suggestions, I'd say start at a community college. Usually, they cost about $45 per credit. I used up all of my financial aid on an expensive 2 year school and a transfer year at another expensive university. I still want to pursue another degree, so I'm working full time and taking internet/video courses part-time. It is working out very well for me.
At the very least, even if you do get financial aid and want to go to a major university, I would suggest still going to a community college for your general ed courses and transferring to the university of your choice. You'll save a LOT of money in the end. I wish I had done that!

Some schools allow payment plans but you are still looking at about 300-500 dollars upfront not including books. Your best bet is to get a scholarship and talk to the financial aid office at your school about your situation.
