If you are a more advanced user that is only going to be designing/developing, Fedora would be your better bet. You can also emulate windows to run certain programs using a program called Wine.

If you plan on also playing games or using software that requires you to use windows beyond simple emulation, than you should choose windows.

Both platforms have thier pros and cons. Windows is generally prefered by many... beginners and mediocres. The plus points with Windows is the ease of use and the ease and availability of all kinds of software. But the disadvantages are many, inluding a hefty license fee, myriad security holes and all kinds of problems.

Fedora (or linux in general) has a hyge advantage in terms of security and cost. Many flavours are highly customisable and there are a lot of flavours to choose from. Most of the time there will be a flavour/distro built exactly to do the kind of work that you've been doing using make-shift programs. But on the other hand, Linux is little tricker to install and maintain. You'll have to invlove yourself to get hold of software (particularly device drivers) as well as to install it.

On the whole it is upto the end-user to decide. People whoe are ready to forgo some comfort in exchange for better security and lower costs would definitely choose linux over windows anyday. But beginners and less serious users would proabably go for windows.

Fedora is more stable and offers much better performance and consistency than Windows does. The only downside if any that I can see to Linux is that it can be a PITA to compile code and look for dependencies just so you can install a simple application. Aside from that it is superior to Windows in every measurable way. Security, performance, flexibility are all better with Linux.

Mac OS X is great too. It gives you the stability and performance on UNIX but with a ridiculously user-friendly interface that makes living with it a pleasure rather than the chore it is to deal with Windows and all it's problems.

You cant really compare the 2 at all. XP is for users that just want there machine to work with an average rate of failure and that will look pretty. Fedora is an open source OS that developers use to make and change the OS to what they want and the source just keeps moving on. Most are not pretty but are 200x more stable.

For developers, its always better to go with Linux (i.e., Fedora)

Open source allows for much more freedom when developing.

My suggestion: Get a dual boot system with both. That is what I did.

If you can only have one then it depends. Where do you plan to do most of your work? In a windows environment or Unix/Linux environment? Why can't you have both as a dual boot system?
