I learnt to drive using a manual and am glad I did. Although I started driving in an Automatic straight after my test which was great for my confidence but I still had the knowledge of using a manual - so the transition from Automatic to Manual was much easier. This gave me the time to build up confidence on the roads and then I was able to concentrate on getting used to the gears.

Learning to drive in a manual transmission car is more difficult because you are learning how to operate the machine and all of the traffic laws at the same time. Automatic cars are easier to operate (as a machine), which allows you to concentrate more on the road conditions, drivers around you, etc. I would definitely suggest learning to drive a manual at some point, but perhaps wait until you are comfortable driving in general. (You have much more control over the performance of your car when driving a manual, it is a lot of fun! And, should you ever travel internationally, you will need to know how to drive a manual transmission vehicle as automatics are not as common outside the US.)

Honestly if you already know how to drive a manual then you would probably figure out the automatic within 2 minutes. There is really no "learning to it" ...apply the brake and put it in "drive" or "reverse" and go. When your done apply the brake again and put it in "park"
I have never heard of the "manual" or "automatic" drivers license and have never been asked when I apply for a license which I can drive. I can drive both...I suppose they were psychic and knew that.
Automatics are easier yes. But manuals are more fun to drive and I think actually make you more aware of whats going on around you.

It really depends on the person. If you don't have any trouble with multitasking and you think you may be driving a car with a 5 speed then it's not a bad idea.

However it is definitely easier to learn on an automatic. That goes without saying really. It is a lot to concentrate on driving and checking your mirrors and merging and everything else without trying not to stall the car. Less than 10% of cars in the United States are stick shifts now so unless you really want to buy a stick shift or you're going to be driving one I would save learning that for later. You can always learn it another time.

No.. learn in an manual! - for I don't know how many times for any given reason someone had to drive my car, or someone else's which is manual, and they cannot, for they don't know how!! I did my learning and car lessons in a manual, but when it came down to the test, then I went with automatic. I am also grateful that I knew manual/standard for when I moved to Europe, that is all they have. Cheaper on gasoline and better for the breakpads overall. You also learn to control the car better in snowy/rainy conditions.

and regardless if you take your test in manual or automatic - you can still drive both! - At least in Canada and over in Europe - I would only safely assume this is the same in the USA.

... and yes, have a good experienced manual/standard driver to teach you how to work the shifting etc..

I would reccomend learning how to drive the manual shifting vehicle. Most people drive with their hand on the shifter whether it's auto or manual. Might as well have both arms doing something and keep your brain entertained. Manuals are a lot more fun. Would anyone in their right mind buy an automatic Lamborghini?

If you already use a manual, I'd keep with it. It takes about 30 seconds to learn automatic once you have manual. The only reason to start with an automatic is to make one less thing to worry about when you already have your hands full. If you do, once driving becomes second nature, you can always add the manual transmission as an extra skill. I didn't have to take any special tests for it. It's always best to have more skills available to you than fewer.

It appears that the law varies as to testing for the ability to switch from auto to manual. Check your local ordinance.

Sure it would be easier in an automatic but if you can already drive a manual and will be driving one go ahead and learn with the manual.

In the UK, it's more of a problem to have a license which only lets you drive automatics, as a lower % of cars, compared with the US (70%+) are automatic.

If you've already driven a manual, stick with it. If you find steering, manoeuvering, checking mirrors, signalling, etc difficult, then use an automatic till you get those nailed, THEN go up to a manual.

Oh - and enter my avatar competition (edit the response you made to my Q).

Learning in a manual is much better. You can drive an automatic car easily.
