Atelectasis is very common after surgery. Your friend needs to practice deep breathing and coughing. Basically, he is not inflating his lungs enough. If he works on this diligently, like 10 times an hour, then they will be able to decrease the oxygen over time, as he improves. Also ask the nurse for an "incentive spirometer", it is a small plastic device to help your friend learn to take deep breaths. This does need to be taken seriously; it can easily worsen if your friend does not actively participate in his own recovery. This is one of those things where the hospital can only do so much. Your friend can actually make the biggest difference himself by taking deep breaths and coughing regularly 10 times and hour. If he can't be trusted to do this himself, then his visitors should encourage him when they are there.

Did they give your friend an Incentive Spirometer after surgery? Did he use it often? Atelectasis is common after surgery and means that the patient is hypoventilating. He is not taking deep enough breaths to open all of his alveoli. It is hard to do after surgery because it hurts but it sure beats going on a ventilator. That is the reason that post operative nurses are so mean and make you take deep breaths, cough and get out of bed and walk so soon after surgery. A higher oxygen delivery is not going to do anything for his atelectasis. It will increase his saturation but if he is not ventilating properly then his atelectasis will get worse which will decrease his sats even more and then require the need for higher oxygen delivery and possible intubation and mechanical ventilation (from a machine)

To save a burning building, first the fire needs putting out. While still unsafe to enter, rescuers enter the building and reinforce the foundation while others are kept away incase fears become reality. Sometimes, a small part of the building will collapse, but the reinforcements hold up and the building remains. Other times the building begins to collapse completely, which may mean either the fire still burns or the damage was too great. Even then, it can sometimes still be saved, but it will cost a lot more!!
I send your friend my prayers.

Atelectasis can happen after surgery, but it is NOT very common as the previous poster stated. But otherwise, good advice there.

It is giving him more oxygen so he can breath. If you have 60% spo2, you need to be in the hospital getting O2. That is why he has it at home now, otherwise he will die.
