As a Buddhist my 'rules' are thus
The practise of wisdom
1. Right understanding
2. Right intention
The practise of ethical conduct
3. Right speech
4. Right action
5. Right livelihood
The practise of mental discipline
6. Right effort
7. Right mindfulness
8. Right concentration
In all of the elements of the Noble Eightfold Path, the word "right" is a translation of the word samyañc (Sanskrit) or sammÄ (PÄli), which denotes completion, togetherness, and coherence, and which can also carry the sense of "perfect" or "ideal".
I undertake the precept to refrain from taking the life (killing) of living beings.
I undertake the precept to refrain from stealing.
I undertake the precept to refrain from sexual misconduct
I undertake the precept to refrain from false speech (lying).
I undertake the precept to refrain from intoxicants which lead to heedlessness.
I only hope I can Live up to them
Peace from a Buddhist..in the season of joy.....

The best answer to your question is not in my own words. It would be a long cut-and-paste, so I simply provide a link:
http://hobbes.ncsa.uiuc.edu/desiderata.html
This is the Deisderata by Max Ehrmann.
(final verse)
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.
