He had just prophesied about a number of things that would happen near the end of the age, just before He returns. Things that would set the stage for the end-time events.
He meant that the generation that sees these things coming to pass, will not pass away before he comes.
Many teachers think that the beginning event in this series was the re-creation of Israel in 1948.
If so, then the generation that saw that event (People born before 1948) is beginning to pass from the earth.
His return could be very soon.
Good idea to look into this for yourself.

Read Matthew 24
And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
This happened in 70 AD. The stones were overlaid in gold so Titus has it dismantled to melt them down. Litterly not one stone was left on top of the other.
And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all [these things] must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Mat 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Mat 24:8 All these [are] the beginning of sorrows.
So this will be the beginning. How many generations would this take? The temple wasn't destroyed until 70 AD. Jesus made it clear that no man knows the time or date. Let me lay it out real clear for you.
It could be right now this second. It could be ten thousand years from now but this generation shall not pass untill all these things are fullfilled. What generation? Us the Christians. The followers of Christ. The people he was speaking to.
You asked I answerd. Maybe someone will actually read this.

When you see all these things start to happen, this will be the generation. Read all the chapter to get His message in context.
We are living in that generation. No other time could all this happen like it's happening today.
Matthew 24: 14And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
15When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:)
God said Homosexuality is an abomination. The abomination is standing in the holy place today. The holy place is behind the pulpit preaching the word of God. (whoso readeth, let him understand:)

Mat 24:34 - Verily I say unto you, this generation shall not pass,.... Not the generation of men in general; as if the sense was, that mankind should not cease, until the accomplishment of these things; nor the generation, or people of the Jews, who should continue to be a people, until all were fulfilled; nor the generation of Christians; as if the meaning was, that there should be always a set of Christians, or believers in Christ in the world, until all these events came to pass; but it respects that present age, or generation of men then living in it; and the sense is, that all the men of that age should not die, but some should live
till all these things were fulfilled; see Mat_16:28 as many did, and as there is reason to believe they might, and must, since all these things had their accomplishment, in and about forty years after this: and certain it is, that John, one of the disciples of Christ, outlived the time by many years; and, as Dr. Lightfoot observes, many of the Jewish doctors now living, when Christ spoke these words, lived until the city was destroyed; as Rabban Simeon, who perished with it, R. Jochanan ben Zaccai, who outlived it, R. Zadoch, R. Ishmael, and others: this is a full and clear proof, that not anything that is said before, relates to the second coming of Christ, the day of judgment, and end of the world; but that all belong to the coming of the son of man, in the destruction of Jerusalem, and to the end of the Jewish state.

It means that before THIS generation dies, all things written in the book of revelations referring to the end of the world, will happen. If there is to be a new heaven and new earth, the old one must be done away with. It tells us how in Revelations

It was fulfilled in the event of Jerusalem’s destruction by the Romans in A.D. 70. The secondary meaning is of the End Times. Most prophecy has an immediate and later fulfillment.

Albert Barnes (1832)
"This generation, &c. - This age; this race of men. A generation is about thirty of forty years. The destruction of Jerusalem took place about forty years after this was spoken.
Thomas Newton (1754)
"'The coming of Christ' is also the same period with the destruction of Jerusalem, as may appear from several places in the Gospels, and particularly from these two passages; 'There are some standing here,' saith our blessed Lord, 'who shall not taste of death till they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom,' Matt xvi. 28, that is, evidently, there are some standing here who shall live, not till they end of the world, to the coming of Christ to judge mankind, but till the destruction of Jerusalem, to the coming of Christ in judgment upon the Jews. In another place, John xxi.22, speaking to Peter concerning John, he saith, 'If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?' what is that to thee, if I will that he live till the destruction of Jerusalem? as in truth he did, and long. 'The coming of Christ,' and 'the conclusion of the age,' being therefore only different expressions to denote the same period with the destruction of Jerusalem, the purpose of the question plainly is, when shall the destruction of Jerusalem be, and what shall be the signs of it?'"
