Most scanners use one or the other, never both that I've ever seen.

CIS stands for Contact Image Sensor.

CCD stands for Charge Coupled Device.

CIS is cheaper than CCD.

CCD is more sensitive and much more accurate.

Either will work for basic text scanning. If you need highly accurate scans for Optical Character Recognition or for image scans, stick with CCD.

CIS typically cheaper & often plugs into USB with no need for additional power.

CCD is usually significantly more expensive & needs extra power block.

I doubt you will see any difference in performance if you are only scanning books.

(CCD is better it you are scanning film negatives or slide transparancies, but you will need a unit with a special film adaptor).
